Swift Current Broncos News Release
Swift Current, Sask. - The Swift Current Broncos (11-12-2-1) used a three-goal second period to propel themselves to a 4-1 win over the Moose Jaw Warriors (12-13-1-1) Friday night.
Both teams had excellent scoring chances in the opening 20 minutes including Mathew Ward receiving a penalty shot with 3:12 remaining in the period.
Ward skated into the Moose Jaw zone and tried to sneak a shot through the five hole, but Carl Tetachuk dropped to his knees to deny Ward. The shots read 13-9 Moose Jaw after 20 minutes.
Sam McGinley took bragging rights for the Teddy Bear Toss goal early in the second period. During a scramble in the slot, Cole Nagy poked the puck back to McGinley who pinched in from the blue line and he snapped a shot through traffic over the glove of Tetachuk to send the teddy bears flying.
Raphael Pelletier added to the Broncos lead two and a half minutes later as he banked a puck off Tetachuk and in from below the goal line for his seventh of the season.
The Broncos picked up their third goal of the period when Ward gained the Moose Jaw and spotted Josh Filmon streaking down the left wing. Ward fired a tape-to-tape pass to Filmon who cut to the net and beat Tetachuk for his 10th of the season, giving the Broncos a 3-0 lead through 40 minutes.
The Warriors pushed back in the third, outshooting the Broncos 16-6 over the final 20 minutes but Isaac Poulter stood tall in the Bronco goal, keeping his team ahead 3-0.
While on the power play late in regulation the Warriors pulled Tetachuk for the extra attacker. The Broncos fired the puck the length of the ice toward the empty net multiple times before Pelletier was able to find it, pushing the Bronco lead to 4-0.
The Warriors spoiled Poulter's shutout bid, scoring on the same power play with 37 seconds left for the 4-1 final score.
The Broncos now head to Moose Jaw looking for the weekend sweep before a three-game road trip through Alberta before the Christmas break.
Announced attendance was 1,528.
