Oil Kings Halt the ICE

Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings (7-2-0-1) put an end to the Winnipeg ICE's (11-1-0-0) near historic win streak at 11 games with a come from behind 3-1 win on Friday night at Rogers Place.

The Oil Kings came out of the gates flying, generating three scoring chances on their opening shift, with the best chance coming off a nifty re-direct by Josh Williams that Gage Alexander was able to make a left pad save on.

The ICE opened the scoring on a power play 6:19 into the game after Benjamin Zloty setup Connor McClennon for a one-time blast in the left-wing circle that beat Sebastian Cossa over the right-shoulder.

Late in the period, the Oil Kings came mere inches from tying the game after Carson Latimer was sent in alone but snapped his shot just wide of the ICE net, leaving Edmonton in a 1-0 hole after 20 minutes.

The Oil Kings started the second period like they did the first, generating some good looks off the opening faceoff and this time it would be Latimer being denied on a one-timer from the slot by a challenging Alexander.

The bulk of the second period was very much a defensive struggle between the two clubs as neither looked to give an inch, but in the final moments the game opened up.

Conor Geekie had the best chance to adjust the scoreboard after he was setup on the doorstep of the Edmonton net for what looked like a sure goal before a sprawling left-pad save by Cossa negated the ICE from extending their lead, to keep the score at 1-0 Winnipeg after two periods.

The Oil Kings finally broke through on the ICE 3:28 into the last stanza after Carter Souch sped into the offensive zone, button hooked along the right-wing wall and feathered a beautiful cross-ice pass onto the tape of a charging Dylan Guenther in the left-circle where he snapped a shot over the glove of Alexander to even the score with his third goal in as many games.

Carson Latimer gave the Oil Kings their first lead of the game with 8:18 left in regulation time after he whipped a one-timer in off the far post from between the hash marks on a setup by Souch and Guenther for his fifth goal in his last four games.

Cossa barred the door the rest of the way, and Jaxsen Wiebe provided the dagger by sliding home his second goal of the year into an empty net with just 16 seconds left on the clock.

Cossa stopped 26 shots for his sixth win of the season, while Alexander turned away 21 shots in the losing cause.  The Oil Kings went 0-for-2 on the power play, while Winnipeg was 1-for-1.

Next up, the Oil Kings hit the road tomorrow to battle the Red Deer Rebels at 7:00 P.M.  You can listen to the game at oilkings.ca/radio.
