Prince Albert Raiders News Release

Prince Albert, Sask. - The Prince Albert Raiders (2-7-0-1) earned a point, but fell 5-4 in a shootout to the Brandon Wheat Kings (5-6-0-0) on Friday night at the Art Hauser Centre.

Remy Aquilon scored twice for the Raiders in the loss. Kaiden Guhle had three assists, while Vladislav Shilo also picked up a pair of helpers for Prince Albert. Brett Hyland had a goal and two assists for the Wheat Kings; Nolan Ritchie added a goal and an assist for Brandon.

It was Aquilon who got the scoring started on Friday night at the 6:51 mark of the opening period. Guhle set up Aquilon with a one-timer at the blueliner and the overager from Kelowna, B.C. blasted a shot past Ethan Kruger for his first of the season.

Reece Vitelli kicked off a wild stretch of just over a minute with his fourth of the season. He stayed with a bouncing puck in the slot to spin and fire a backhander through Kruger's five hole to put the Raiders up 2-0.

Fifty-one seconds later, the Wheat Kings cut into the lead. Hyland threw a puck to the slot from behind the net. Tyson Zimmer was on the other end of the pass and his quick wrister beat Tikhon Chaika.

Nineteen seconds after Zimmer's goal, Zakhar Polshakov tied things up at 2-2. He made a pass to Hyland on a two-on-one rush. Hyland gave it right back and Polshakov beat a sprawling Chaika to level the score heading into the first intermission.

Cale Sanders broke the tie midway through the second period. Guhle's point shot was knocked down in front of the goal and the puck trickled to the left side of the net. Sanders was in the right spot and banged in the loose puck for his second goal of the season, putting the Raiders up 3-2 after two periods.

The Wheat Kings tied things up 4:38 into the third period. Jesiah Bennett got in behind the Raiders defence on a partial breakaway. His shot went off the post, but stayed behind Chaika. Hyland, who was trailing the play, was able to put the puck in from the crease to make it a 3-3 game.

With 8:18 to play, Aquilon struck again to put the Raiders back in the lead. Shilo won an offensive-zone faceoff back to Guhle at the point. He set up Aquilon with another one-timer and the blueliner scored a nearly identical goal to give the Raiders a 4-3 advantage.

Brandon tied things once again late in the third on a power play. Off the rush, Zimmer put a shot on goal that was turned aside by Chaika, but the rebound found the stick of Ritchie who potted the equalizer to send the game to overtime.

In the extra frame, Landon Kosior had the best chance to end it for the Raiders. He got around former teammate Eric Pearce and drove to the net. He got a shot on Kruger, but wasn't able to lift it over the Brandon goaltender's pads.

After Ozzy Wiesblatt was stopped in the first round of the shootout, Hyland scored to put the Wheat Kings ahead. In the second round, Guhle levelled the score with a marker of his own. Reece Vitelli was stopped for the Raiders in the third round, which allowed Zimmer to end the shootout with his goal.

Chaika finished with 18 saves in his first game at the Art Hauser Centre. Kruger stopped 33 shots for the Wheat Kings.

The Raiders head to Brandon tomorrow night to finish off the home-and-home series with the Wheat Kings at Westoba Place. Game time is 6 p.m. Catch the game on WHL Live on CHL TV, or listen to Rob Mahon on 101.5 Beach Radio.
