The Story:

The Winterhawks completed their biggest comeback of the season, overcoming a 3-0 deficit to beat Everett on the road and starting their six-game road trip on a high note.

Cross Hanas led all skaters with three points (G-2A) plus the game-winning goal in the shootout, Clay Hanus tied the game with under two minutes to go and Dante Giannuzzi stopped the last 26 shots he faced, including all three Everett shootout attempts.

The Silvertips out shot the Winterhawks 15-to-1 in the opening period of play and took a 3-0 lead with them into the intermission. The Hawks committed three consecutive penalties to put themselves in a hole and Everett scored two of their first period tallies on the power play. Portland battled though.

The second period went the Hawks' way with Hanas striking for a power play goal of his own on a hard, sharp angle shot to put Portland on the scoreboard. The team carried that momentum into the third and Kozak scored his third goal of the week on a beautiful setup by Hanas and Hanus.

A late double minor penalty by Everett led to the Hawks' second power play goal and Hanus scored the tying goal moments later after getting an extra attacker on the ice. It was quite an impressive comeback just to force overtime, but the fun wasn't done.

Giannuzzi denied seven overtime shots and helped the Hawks survive a penalty kill situation to force the game to a shootout. Hanas tucked his shootout attempt five-hole in the opening round and Giannuzzi turned aside Michal Gut, Olen Zellweger and Alex Swetlikoff in the shootout to pick up a key 4-3 win.

The Hawks are off the rest of this weekend and they travel to Kamloops, B.C. on Monday to prepare for a Wednesday night tilt.

QUOTE OF THE NIGHT presented by BBF TECHNOLOGIES:

"Cross' power play goal was a big turning point. That gave us some life and Kurt (Smythe) had a big hit on (Olen) Zellweger and that really turned the tides to build off that momentum."
