Prince Albert Raiders News Release

Brandon, Man. - Keaton Sorensen's pair of first-period goals paced the Prince Albert Raiders (3-7-0-1) to a 3-1 win over the Brandon Wheat Kings (5-7-0-0) at Westoba Place in Brandon on Saturday night.

It was the second multi-goal game of Sorensen's WHL career. His last came on Dec. 30, 2019 as a member of the Red Deer Rebels against the Everett Silvertips. Landon Kosior also scored for the Raiders in the win, while six different Raiders registered assists in the contest.

Sorensen got the Raiders on the board as the Raiders took advantage of a bad Wheat Kings' line change midway through the opening period. Kaiden Guhle quickly fed the puck up the ice to Evan Herman who made a saucer pass to spring Sorensen on a partial breakaway. Sorensen made a move to his backhand and slid the puck through Ethan Kruger's five hole for his second goal of the season.

With 2:54 to go in the first, Sorensen added another. The play started when Ozzy Wiesblatt set up a pinching Tayem Gislason with a one-timer, but Kruger slid to make the save. Sorensen retrieved the puck and got the puck to Wiesblatt at the left faceoff circle. Wiesblatt returned the pass and Sorensen stepped into a wrister that beat a screened Kruger to give the Raiders a 2-0 advantage at the first intermission.

In the second, Herman set up a chance and nearly scored one of his own. The Manitoba product worked a give-and-go with Kosior, sending the blueliner to the net. Kosior was able to get a shot off, but Kruger turned it aside.

Shortly after, Herman created a breakaway as he skated into a clearance from the Raiders' end and got around Mason Ward. His attempt on goal was stopped by Kruger.

The Wheat Kings were able to cut the Raiders' lead in half with 1:56 to play in the middle frame. Brett Hyland cut to the centre of the zone and fired a low shot on goal that beat Carter Serhyenko to make it a 2-1 game in favour of the Raiders after 40 minutes.

The Raiders restored their two-goal lead shortly after a power-play chance expired. Vladislav Shilo found Kosior near the bottom of the left faceoff circle. The Regina product took it to the net and slipped a shot through Kruger for his first of the season.

The goal was initially waved off by the officials, followed quickly by a scrum behind the Wheat Kings' goal. After the penalties were sorted out and the play was reviewed, the call on the ice was overturned to give the Raiders a 3-1 lead 4:26 into the third.

Serhyenko stood tall in goal for the Raiders for the rest of the period. He stopped all nine Wheat King shots in the third period, including a shot from the slot by Vegas Golden Knights draft pick Marcus Kallionkieli on a Wheat Kings power play.

In total, Serhyenko made 24 saves to pick up his third win of the season. Kruger stopped 25 Raider shots in the loss for Brandon.

The Raiders back at home on Friday night to kick off a home-and-home series with the Saskatoon Blades. Puck drop is 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the Raiders Office and at SaskTix.ca.
