Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Red Deer, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings (7-2-1-1) erased a 3-1 third period deficit on Saturday night to earn a single-point in Red Deer but fell 4-3 in overtime to the Rebels (7-4-1-0)
The Oil Kings and Rebels skated to a scoreless first period with Red Deer outshooting the Oil Kings 13-4.ÃÂ Neither team could find their groove in the frame after combining for eight penalties in the period.
The Rebels did get a pair of good looks early with Arshdeep Bains being stoned by Sebastian Cossa.ÃÂ The Oil Kings best opportunity came just past the midway mark of the period with Dylan Guenther letting fly a hard one-timer from the left-circle on a four-on-three power play, but Red Deer netminder Connor Ungar snared it with his glove hand.
The Oil Kings started the second period with 3:42 of power play time and while they couldn't find the back of the net with the man-advantage they were able to build some momentum which lead to the game's opening goal.ÃÂ At the 6:27 mark of the period, Simon Kubicek gave Edmonton a 1-0 lead after he jumped up on a rush into the Red Deer zone and finished off a cross-ice pass from Dylan Guenther.
Shortly after taking the lead, the Oil Kings ran into penalty trouble granting the Rebels a 5-on-3 power play and at 9:07 of the middle stanza, the Rebels converted on a goal from Blake Stevenson that pinballed in off an Oil Kings defender.ÃÂ Just under three minutes later, on another power play, the Rebels took their first lead of the game with Ben King snapping home a shot off the far post from the left-circle.
Cossa would keep the Oil Kings within a goal just moments later after Bains got in alone on the Oil Kings netminder, but couldn't slip the puck underneath him.
With under four minutes left in the second, the Rebels were able to find an insurance marker after Bains feathered a 90-foot pass from his own zone to King in behind the Edmonton defence and just as it looked like he was going to shoot, an on-rushing Jhett Larson arrived and stuffed home a backdoor pass to send the Rebels into the second intermission ahead 3-1.
For a second straight night, the Oil Kings were able to erase a third period deficit with Jalen Luypen taking charge of the comeback bid.ÃÂ At the 5:15 mark of the third he was able to muscle home a rebound from the top of the Red Deer crease off a shot from Eric Johnston to draw the Oil Kings within one, and then with just 3:10 left on the clock, he combined with Jacob Boucher to tie the game as they streaked in on a two-on-none rush and Luypen elevated the puck into the top-shelf from in-tight, sending the game to overtime.
In overtime, the Oil Kings had several chances to win the game but could not solve Ungar for a fourth time.ÃÂ In the final minute of the extra frame, the Rebels were gifted their ninth power play of the game, and King was able to add his second marker of the night to give Red Deer the victory.
Cossa finished the night making a season-high 40 saves, while Ungar turned away 24 shots for the Rebels.ÃÂ The Oil Kings went 0-for-5 on the power play, while the Rebels were 3-for-9.
Next up, the Oil Kings are back in #TheKingdom on Tuesday, November 2 when they welcome the Lethbridge Hurricanes to town at 7:00 P.M.
