Oil Kings Fall to Visiting Rebels

Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings opened their three-game homestand with a 6-2 loss to the Red Deer Rebels on Friday night at Rogers.

In the first period, the Rebels jumped out to a 1-0 lead just before the halfway mark of the frame after Jayden Grubbe was able to clean up a rebound in front of the Edmonton net off a point-shot from Matteo Fabrizi.

The Oil Kings were able to respond with an equalizer just over five minutes later after Noah Boyko took a cross-ice back-door pass from Rilen Kovacevic and fired it into the back of the Red Deer net on an Edmonton power play.

It looked as though the Oil Kings and Rebels would head to the first intermission locked in a one-all draw but a pair of late goals from the visitors would change that thought.

First, Fabrizi snuck a point-shot through a crowd of bodies in front of Kolby Hay to restore the Rebel lead with just over a minute left in the period and then, with just 43 seconds left on the clock, Jace Isley tallied a shorthanded marker on a hot-shot from the left-circle of the Edmonton zone.

In the second period, the Rebels added to their lead just two minutes in with the league's leading goal scorer Kai Uchacz tipping in a pass from Christoffer Sedoff for his 30th of the year.

Kovacevic was able to halve the Red Deer lead at the 5:56 mark after being sprung on a breakaway by Boyko and zipping a shot past Rhett Stoesser.

But just like the first period, the Rebels would tack on a couple of later markers as both Hunter Mayo and Kalan Lind found the back of the Edmonton net in the final four minutes of the middle stanza.

There would be no scoring in the third period as the Rebels claimed the 6-2 victory.

Kolby Hay (9/13) and Logan Cunningham (16/18) combined for 25 saves for the Oil Kings, while Stoesser turned in a 17-save performance for the Rebels. Edmonton went 1-for-6 on the power play, Red Deer was 1-for-2.

Next up, the Oil Kings host their annual New Year's Day Fireworks Frenzy game this Sunday at 2:00 P.M. against the Lethbridge Hurricanes.
