Raiders Pick up Single Point in 4-3 Overtime Loss to the Pats

December 30, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Prince Albert Raiders News Release

The Prince Albert Raiders erased a 3-0 third period deficit, but ultimately fell 4-3 to the Regina Pats in overtime on Friday night at the Art Hauser Centre. In his third consecutive start, Max Hildebrand stopped 25 of 29 shots in goal, while Drew Sim stopped 41 of 44 shots for the Pats.

The Pats took a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes, thanks to goals from three different players. Easton Armstrong started the scoring at the 7:06 mark. Luke Bateman poked a pass in the neutral zone ahead for Armstrong, who walked into the Raider zone. Stepping down to the left circle, the forward fired a shot glove side over Max Hildebrand for his 13th goal of the season, putting Regina up 1-0.

With 5:02 left in the opening frame, a bizarre series of events led to the Pats doubling their lead. On the powerplay and with another penalty coming up, Regina tried to give the Raiders the puck to stop play to head onto a five on three. Instead, Prince Albert didn't touch the puck, and Borya Valis decided to rip a shot from the point instead. That decision turned out to be the right one for the winger, as the shot beat a screened Hildebrand to make it 2-0.

With 3:37 left in the frame, Regina extended the lead to 3-0. Alexander Suzdalev gathered a pass, toe dragged around a defender, and sniped home his 21st of the season. Late in the opening period, the Pats took a 3-0 lead, which they took into the first intermission.

After a scoreless second period, the comeback charge began for the Raiders in the third. Just 1:35 into the final frame, Carson Latimer got the Raiders on the board. Harrison Lodewyk won a puck battle along the left wall and generated a two on one rush with Latimer. Lodewyk sent a feed across for the latter, and The Mayor buried his 10th goal of the season to make it a 3-1 game.

At the 7:11 mark, Landon Kosior tied things up on the powerplay. Playing catch with Ryder Ritchie, Kosior took a pass and faked a one timer, before taking a stride to his right and firing a shot. The point shot worked its way through traffic and past Drew Sim, making it a 3-2 game with his 12th of the season.

The comeback completed with 4:52 left in the third, as Gabe Ludwig drew the Raiders even. Ludwig won the battle for a loose puck behind the net and tucked home a shot from beneath the goal line. Ludwig's fifth goal of the season brought the Art Hauser Centre to life, as he tied the game 3-3 in the late stages of the third period.

For the third time this season, overtime would be needed to find a winner in a Raider game.

The Raiders had an early chance to win the game in the extra frame, given a powerplay just 26 seconds in. Prince Albert couldn't capitalize on the man advantage, as Sim stood tall in goal with two big saves. After the penalty expired, the Pats would go on to win the game at the 3:41 mark of overtime. Tanner Brown walked in all alone from the slot and buried a shot low glove past Hildebrand, giving the Pats a 4-3 win on the road in overtime.

The Raiders picked up a point in the loss, falling to 11-20-3-0 on the season. They will head to Regina for the second half of the home and home on Sunday afternoon for the rematch against the Pats. Puck drop is at 4pm.
