Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
Dayton, OH - No-hit through 4 1/3 innings Wednesday night, the Fort Wayne nine had an uphill climb from the start. In a 7-2 loss against the Dayton Dragons, the TinCaps broke a scoreless streak of 14 consecutive innings, but dropped their fifth straight game, as well as the series at Fifth Third Field.
Dayton (5-8, 41-40) starter Nick Travieso (7-4) bored his way through the Fort Wayne (5-8, 35-47) lineup, striking out five batters in six innings. He walked two and lowered his ERA from 3.75 to 3.46. The only two hits he allowed came with one out in the fifth inning - back-to-back singles from Rey Bruguera and Edwin Moreno.
The Dragons led, 2-0, after the first two innings against TinCaps starter Ronald Herrera (5-5). Dayton capitalized on a Dustin Peterson throwing error in the first, using the extra out to score a run, and plated another in the second after a Jose Ortiz triple turned into a Jonathan Reynoso sacrifice fly opportunity. Herrera pitched well in his five innings, surrendering only three hits, one earned run, and striking out four. He set the tone for a four-pitcher night with eight strikeouts and no walks.
The Dayton lead extended to 3-0 in the seventh inning with Justin Livengood on the mound. A two-out double by Ronald Bueno knocked in Reynoso, who had started the play at first base. Dragons Manager Jose Nieves had given a stop signal to Reynoso, who ran through it and scored without a throw, as TinCaps right fielder Edwin Moreno delivered the ball to second base.
For the first time since the seventh inning of Monday's rain-shortened loss in South Bend, the TinCaps scored a run in the eighth inning against Dragons reliever Scott Brattvet. Jake Bauers hit a two-run single to drive in both Ronnie Richardson and Dustin Peterson. Although the inning ended on an around-the-horn double play, the TinCaps' four hits in the frame were double what they had produced over the game's first seven innings.
The bottom-of-the-eighth combination of Eric Yardley, Jorge Guzman and two TinCaps errors combined to surrender four runs and put the game out of reach for Fort Wayne, which went down 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth against Brattvet, who earned his 10th save.
The finale of the three-game series as well as the road trip is set for Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. The scheduled starters are Jeffery Enloe for Fort Wayne and Jackson Stephens for Dayton. The game can be heard on ESPN Radio 1380 and TinCaps.com.
