Beloit Drops Eighth Straight in Rain-Shortened Game

The Beloit Snappers dropped their eighth-straight game Wednesday night, 8-1 to Quad Cities in a rain-shortened five innings contest.

Hunter Adkins struggled in his first start at home (5 IP, 6 H, 4 ER) and the River Bandits capitalized off a crucial defensive error in the fifth inning to blow the game wide open.

With Quad Cities leading 4-1 in the fifth, Beloit's B.J. Boyd dropped an inning-ending catch in center field and Jose Fernandez responded with a grand slam two batters later to seal the victory.

After the Snappers stranded a man in the fifth inning, the game was suspended due to rain and eventually cancelled after a half-hour rain delay.

Evan Grills pitched five innings (5 IP, 5 H, 1 ER) for the River Bandits and picked up the win.

Beloit struggled from the onset as Quad Cities opened up the contest with a 2-run home run courtesy of Marc Wik in the first inning. The home run was Wik's first of his Midwest League season as he has appeared with four different teams this year.

The Snappers cut their deficit in half in the third inning as B.J. Boyd's RBI-groundout sent B.A. Vollmuth across the plate. Vollmuth led off the inning with a double and is batting .308 in his last ten games after struggling throughout the majority of June (.171).

Quad Cities tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning behind a solo shot home run by Ronnie Mitchell and a RBI-single from Jake Rodriguez. The home run was Mitchell's team-best tenth of the season.

The decisive blow came in the fifth inning as two walks and Boyd's error led to Fernandez's grand slam home run. Fernandez finished the night 2-for-3 as he snapped a three-game hitless streak.

The Snappers and River Bandits conclude their series tomorrow night at Pohlman Field at 7:00 p.m.
