Whitecaps leap on Lugs early in 12-4 rout

COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. - The Lansing Lugnuts (6-6, 38-43) opened a three-game series by dropping a 12-4 rout at the hands of the West Michigan Whitecaps (8-4, 49-33) on Tuesday night at Fifth Third Ballpark.

The Whitecaps outhit the Lugnuts 16-6, including eight extra-base hits.

Lansing led early after a two-out single by Mitch Nay in the first, but Lansing starter Chase De Jong (Loss, 0-5) gave up six runs in the second before being removed.

Making his Lansing debut, reliever Brent Powers gave up two runs on a hit and three walks in 1.1 innings.

Trailing 9-1 in the fifth, the Lugnuts plated three runs against West Michigan starter Kevin Ziomek (Win, 7-5), who finished with five strikeouts in five innings for his fourth win in four starts.

Center fielder Anthony Alford went 1-4 with an RBI, stolen base, and a run scored in his first game with the Lugnuts, but left in the seventh inning with an injury after diving for a Raph Rhymes RBI double.

Rhymes, West Michigan's left fielder, went 4-for-5 with four RBIs, knocking three doubles.

The Lugnuts and Whitecaps continue the three-game series on Wednesday night at Fifth Third Ballpark. Lansing right-hander Brad Allen (3-1, 4.46) starts on the mound, with righty Chad Green (2-2, 3.33) pitching for West Michigan.
