South Carolina Stingrays News Release

Biloxi, MS - Pierre-Luc O'Brien scored two goals, and Davis Parley turned aside 26 shots as the South Carolina Stingrays snapped a six game losing streak defeating the Mississippi Sea Wolves 5-3 at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum on Wednesday night.

"It feels so good to get that first win under our belts," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "Its always the first one that is the hardest, but we worked hard, and got a hard fought and well deserved win."

Things didn't look as good in the first period as Travis Lisabeth gave the Wolves a 1-0 lead at 1:32. That 1-0 lead soon turned to 2-0 when Radek Smolenak got his 6th goal of the season, a power play goal at 8:26. But the Rays countered with a power play goal of their own from Andrew Gordon, his 6th of the year. The goal was assisted by Scott Romfo and Stephen Werner at 17:17.

In the second period South Carolina tied the game up at 2 when at 1:23 O'Brien scored his 2nd goal of the season from Matt Scherer and Romfo. But that too was short lived when Mark Hurtubise got his 3rd goal of the season, a short handed unassisted goal to give the Wolves a 3-2 lead after 2 periods.

In the third period the Stingrays went on the offensive rolling off 3 unanswered goals. The first came at 8:30 from Steve Pinizzotto, his 3rd of the season from Bryan Esner and Travis Morin. The second was on the power play, the Rays 2nd power play goal of the game. O'Brien got on the board for the second time of the night at 12:26 from Chris Chaput, whose guarantee of a win prior to the game came true. After getting the lead for the first time the Rays put the nail in the coffin when Werner got his 5th goal of the season from Morin and T.J. McElroy at 15:12. It was the 3rd power play goal for the Stingrays.

The winning goaltender was Parley who stopped 26 of 29 shots. The losing goaltender was Ryan Munce who stopped 50 of the 55 shots he faced. The 55 shots were the most the Stingrays had taken all year. South Carolina went 3 for 9 on the power play while killing 8 of 9 short handed opportunities.

In the game, the Stingrays lost Cail MacLean and O'Brien. MacLean went down with a rib injury in the 2nd period after being hit awkwardly into the boards. He will be reevaluated when the Rays get to Pensacola. O'Brien got a concussion during an altercation in the 3rd period.

"I certainly hope that this win helps us in our next few games," said Bednar. "But we certainly can't look past Pensacola. They are a team that is either very good, or very bad, so we need to play well to come up with another win on this trip."

Stingrays are back in action on Friday night when they take on the Pensacola Ice Pilots for the first time this season. Game time will be at 8:05 from the Pensacola Civic Center.
