Jackals Ground Bombers In Shootout For Seventh Straight Win
November 28, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Elmira Jackals News Release
Kevin Ulanski's goal in the final round of the shootout lifted the Elmira Jackals to their seventh consecutive win, a 3-2 decision over the Dayton Bombers in front of 1,999 fans at the Nutter Center. The Jackals extended their North Division lead over idle Cincinnati to six points as the clubs meet Wednesday night at U.S. Bank Arena.
Ulanski's goal capped off a torrid shootout sequence that saw the teams combine for seven goals in nine attempts with Dan LaCosta (22 saves) stopping two of Dayton's final three shooters to win his fifth straight contest in net. The Jackals received shootout conversions from Benoit Doucet, Scott May and Pierre-Luc Faubert before Ulanski ended the game.
The Jackals held two separate one-goal leads, but would see the Bombers come back to tie the contest on both occasions before advancing to overtime and eventually their second straight shootout.
Scott May, back in the Jackals line-up for the first time since October 26th, netted a power play score 2:22 into the game on feed from the left circle from Chaz Johnson (two assists) for a 1-0 lead.
The hosts answered back two and a half minutes later when Yannick Tifu rung his own rebound around the boards to defenseman Chris Eade, who unloaded a low drive that skirted through traffic and past LaCosta to tie the game 1-1. For Tifu, it was his league-leading 22nd assist and 26th point.
Chris Busby pushed the Jackals in front 2-1 at 10:31 of the second period with May setting the blueliner up for a wrister that beat Bombers netminder Jeremy Duschene over the blocker.
Dayton set the stage for overtime with 5:57 left in regulation on Ryan Smyth's backhand wraparound over the left pad of LaCosta on feeds from Paul Flache and Britt Dougherty.
Dayton entered play with the league's second-rated power play at 25%, but was held scoreless in six chances by an ever-improving Jackals penalty kill that now has twenty-two straight kills going back to Gwinnett's final man advantage a week ago in the Jackals' 6-3 win.
The final kill against Dayton came as the overtime was looming and Jon Landry in the box for roughing. His penalty carried over by twenty seconds into the sudden death period, but Elmira held off the Bombers.
Elmira out shot Dayton 25-24 and was 1-for-5 on the power play.
Elmira now sits at 13-5-0-1 with 27 points atop the North Division, six up on second place Cincinnati. The Jackals and Cyclones meet Wednesday night at U.S. Bank Arena at 7:30 p.m. Radio coverage begins at 7 p.m. with the Hill Top Inn Countdown to Face-Off on MAGIC FM (92.7/97.7).
