Bridgeport Islanders News Release

Frans Nielsen tied a Bridgeport Sound Tigers record by registering a point in 12 consecutive games, but his short-handed goal wasn't enough in a 3-2 loss to the Norfolk Admirals before 3,693 fans at the Arena at Harbor Yard on Monday afternoon.

Norfolk's Brandon Bochenski scored a pair of goals and Admirals overcame a 2-1 third period deficit to skate away with a comeback win. The Admirals improved to an American Hockey League best 29-8-4-1 and the Sound Tigers dropped to 16-17-1-4.

After Bochenski opened the scoring 5:20 into the game, Sound Tiger Brandon Nolan knotted the score at 1-1 with his third of the season just 2:19 later. Jeff Tambellini set up Nielsen for a second period short handed breakaway goal to tie the record set by former Sound Tiger Jeff Hamilton one year ago to the day. Nielsen scored when he beat Norfolk goaltender Corey Crawford on a backhanded shot for his 12th goal of the season at 16:34 of the second period.

Norfolk again tied the game when Colin Fraser converted a two-on-one feed from Danny Richmond 3:18 into the third period. Bochenski snapped the 2-2 tie with the game-winner, firing a one-timer past Sound Tiger goaltender Billy Thompson. Bochenski's second of the game, and 31st of the season, came on the power play at 7:45 of the third. Bruno St. Jacques earned the primary assist, one of two assists for St. Jacques in the game.

Thompson and Crawford were both sharp throughout the afternoon. With the game tied 2-2 in the second, the Sound Tigers killed off a full two minute 5-on-3 Norfolk power play thanks in part to a leg save by Thompson on Carl Corazzini from in close. Thompson also denied Richmond on a middle period breakaway try and later made a glove save on Pierre Parenteau during a one-on-one chance. Crawford, meanwhile, made a breakaway save of his own on Tambellini, during another shorthanded Sound Tiger scoring chance in the second period. Crawford made eight saves during one first period penalty kill as the Sound Tigers peppered the goaltender with 17 opening period shots.

The Admirals outshot the Sound Tigers 37-32 in the game. Norfolk was 1-for-10 on the power play and Bridgeport went 0-for-7 on the man advantage. The Sound Tigers continue to lead the league in penalty killing. The Admirals extended their winning streak to six games.

The Sound Tigers travel to Philadelphia and Hershey this Friday and Saturday respectively, and return to the Arena to host the Binghamton Senators on Wednesday, Jan. 24 at 7:30 p.m. Great seats are available at the Arena at Harbor Yard Box Office.
