Binghamton Senators News Release

LAST WEEK: The Senators (11-23-1-4, 27 pts.) were 0-2 last week, including a 1-0 shootout loss to the defending champion Hershey Bears on Friday night.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 12th vs. HERSHEY (0-1 SOL):

The B-Sens turned in a top notch performance against the Bears, as the club's defense and goaltending matched the defending champs. The Senators rode their penalty kill on Friday night, a unit that was a perfect nine for nine on the night. Netminder KELLY GUARD turned in a top notch effort between the pipes, saving 39 shots for the B-Sens. GUARD had several spectacular saves, including one early in the second period against Alexandre Giroux. Giroux came slashing in from the left post, fainted left and then right right on Guard. The 23-year-old goalie recovered from the initial fake and made the save lying on his back, with his left hand stretched as far as it could possibly stretch. The Bears had a 21-6 shot advantage through 27 minutes of play, but the B-Sens defense controlled the high-scoring Bears. The Senators appeared to score what would have been the game-winner at the 14:21 mark of the third period. A loose puck flopped around in front of the Bears crease, as four Senators had swipes at it. The puck trickled into the net, but not before a whistle halting play. Hershey was unable to capitalize on an ANDY HEDLUND high-sticking call at 18:45, as the B-Sens penalty kill once again rose to the challenge. Kyle Wilson netted the game-winning shootout tally, as the Bears collected two shootout markers. Netminder Maxime Daigneault turned away all four B-Sens' attempts to secure the 1-0 victory for the Bears.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 13th vs. PROVIDENCE (1-8 L):

The following night was not so friendly to the B-Sens, as the Providence Bruins rode into town and handed the Senators their worst loss in franchise history. Leading scorer JEFF HEEREMA put the Senators in front early. DANNY BOIS fired a shot that bounced off the end board and right to a waiting HEEREMA on the left side of the cage, as the 26-year-old winger scoped it past Philippe Sauve for his 19th marker of the season. The Bruins responded with consecutive goals from center David Krejci to close out the first period scoring. Kris Versteeg buried the Bruins third tally just 1:37 seconds into the second stanza, as they took advantage of a Neil Petruic hooking call to extend the lead to two goals. With the Bruins up 5-1 early in the third stanza and Jeff Glass in net, Versteeg buried his second goal of the night. The Bruins added two late goals to make it an 8-1 final. Krejci and Versteeg each finished the night with two goals and one assist, while Bobby Allen had three helpers for the Bruins.

THIS WEEK: The Senators play three games this week, including two against I-81 rival Syracuse. Binghamton heads to Syracuse this afternoon to take on the Crunch. It is the Senators lone Monday game of the year. On Wednesday, the B-Sens welcome the Phantoms back to the Arena at 7:05 p.m. The club finishes the week on Saturday night, with their second game of the week in Syracuse.

SCOUTING REPORT

MONDAY, JANUARY 15th @ SYRACUSE (2:00):

Binghamton has won three games against the Crunch this season, including a 4-2 victory at the Arena on Dec. 26. JOSH HENNESY paced the Senators attack with two markers on the night. The Crunch jumped out to a 1-0 lead off a Derrick Walser power-play goal. Following a RYAN VESCE slashing call, Walser snapped a wrist shot past KELLY GUARD from just inside the blue line. After twenty-one minutes of scoreless hockey, HENNESSY buried a short-handed goal to tie the game at 1 apiece. With ANDY HEDLUND in the penalty box on an interference call, HENNESSY smashed a slap shot into the top left corner of the net. The 21-year-old center struck again, this time on the power play. HENNESSY blasted a one-timer which was deflected by a Crunch player right back into HENNESSY'S possession. He reloaded and snapped a wrist shot past goalie Dan LaCosta to put the Senators up 2-1. Defenseman ANDY HEDLUND tallied the game-winner at the 16:29 mark of the second period. HEDLUND buried a slap shot through the five hole from the high right post. Winger CORY PECKER extended his point streak to five games, as the Montreal native buried an even-strength marker just nineteen seconds after HEDLUND scored his game-winner. After taking the pass from BRIAN MALONEY, PECKER went to the backhand as he crossed in front of the crease to net his seventh tally of the year. The Crunch got the second goal off the stick of Alexandre Picard. Syracuse was working a five-on-three power play when the left winger tapped in a rebound from just outside the crease at 18:52 of the second period. That was as close as the Crunch would get, as GUARD dominated the third period. The netminder stopped all 14 shot attempts to earn his sixth victory of the season.

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 17th vs. PHILADELPHIA (7:05):

The Phantoms edged the Senators 4-2 on Saturday, Jan. 6. Defenseman CHARLIE COOK buried a power-play marker at 4:21 of the first stanza. COOK took the feed from ANDY HEDLUND and blasted a one-timer from to high left post past Scott Munroe. Center BOBBY ROBINS netted his fourth tally of the season, as SERGE PAYER found the slashing ROBINS in front of the cage. PAYER zipped the pass and ROBINS tapped it in the left corner of the net to give the Senators a 2-0 advantage. The Phantoms struck back one minute later as Riley Cote collected two of his own rebounds and final put the puck past JEFF GLASS on the third attempt. Fresh off a hat trick the previous night, Darren Reid buried a power-play marker at 16:29 of the second period to knot the game at 2 all. Three minutes later winger Niko Dimitrakos buried the game-winner, his ninth tally of the year. The Phantoms added an insurance marker by Nate Guenin early in the second period. KELLY GUARD replaced GLASS in goal after the first period, and saved 10 of 11 shots in relief.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 20th @ SYRACUSE (7:30):

The Syracuse Crunch offense is led by Mark Hartigan, who has 27 points this season (15+12=27). Former Binghamton Senator Filip Novak leads Syracuse with 20 assists, and is second behind Hartigan with 23 points (3+20=23).
