Nick Maton Homers in Hens' Loss
July 7, 2023 - International League (IL)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release
The Louisville Bats beat the Toledo Mud Hens with a score of 10-4 on Friday night. The Hens drop to 4-6 in the second half and 37-47 overall.
Jack O'Loughlin started the game for Toledo. He gave up three runs early in the first inning, then cruised through innings 2-4 before running into trouble again in the fifth. The Bats would score another three runs in the fifth, although only two of those runs would be earned.
The Mud Hens offense got off to a slow start in this one. They were held hitless through the first three innings, but got on the board with a couple of singles from Nick Solak and Tyler Nevin. The Hens loaded the bases in that inning but were only able to score one run.
The Hens would capitalize on another opportunity in the following inning. After the Bats scored three runs in the top of the fifth, the Hens answered with a three spot of their own in the bottom half of the inning, capped by a two-run homer by Nick Maton. Maton has six home runs for the Tigers this year and this was his first home run of the year for the Mud Hens.
Blair Calvo and Sean Guenther were the first two pitchers out of the bullpen for Toledo tonight and were very effective in shutting down the Bats lineup. They combined for 2.1 innings, struck out four, and didn't allow a single baserunner.
The Hens kept it close until the final two innings. The Bats scored one run in the eighth and three more in the ninth to pad their lead and make it a 10-4 ball game.
Toledo had eight different players record a hit, but none recorded more than one.
The penultimate game of this week's series against Louisville will begin tomorrow at 7:05 P.M. right here at Fifth Third Field.
