Nailers Make Four Player Moves

December 28, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release

WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Montreal Canadiens, have announced four transactions, with all four taking effect immediately. The Hamilton Bulldogs recalled forward Ben Duffy, the Utica Comets have recalled goaltender Mathieu Corbeil, Wheeling has signed goaltender Alex Westlund, and the Nailers have also acquired goaltender Brooks Ostergard from the Cincinnati Cyclones, in exchange for future considerations.

Duffy, 21, was only a member of the Nailers for six games, but his brief stay in Wheeling was a successful one. After a scoreless debut, Ben netted a pair of goals on November 30th against Toledo, including a shorthanded tally for his first as a pro. Two weeks later, on December 15th, he posted another two-goal game, while adding an assist, as the Nailers earned a point against Florida. The Lower Sackville, NS native also appeared in 15 games with Hamilton, combining for four goals, four assists, and eight points between the two levels.

Corbeil, 22, has appeared in four games between the pipes for the Nailers, including a memorable debut. After suiting up in six games with the CHL's St. Charles Chill, Mathieu took his position with Wheeling on November 30th, and turned away all 39 shots he faced, shutting out the Toledo Walleye, 3-0 at WesBanco Arena. In his next outing, the Montreal, QC native made five more saves, extending his shutout streak, which ultimately ended at 87:29. Most recently, Corbeil stopped 19 of 21 shots, leading the Nailers to a 3-2 overtime win against Evansville on December 21st.

Westlund, 37, appeared in two preseason games with the Nailers, allowing three goals on eight shots against Fort Wayne, before rebounding to deny 13 of 14 opportunities against Reading. This will be Alex's first action in North America since the 2006-07 campaign, as he has spent each of the last six seasons in Europe, primarily with Linz EHC in Austria. Wheeling is the sixth ECHL team for the Flemington Village, NJ native, who also suited up with Dayton, Toledo, Cincinnati, Trenton, and Charlotte. At 37 years and 364 days, Westlund has become the second oldest player to appear in a game with the Nailers/Thunderbirds, trailing only Ron Wilson (39 years, 322 days) from the 1995-96 season, while leading Vadim Slivchenko (37 years, 360 days) from the 2007-08 season.

Ostergard, 26, joins his eighth ECHL team and fourth this season, after appearing in one game each with Idaho and South Carolina, while also dressing as a backup for Cincinnati. Brooks' most successful stint in the league came last season with the Trenton Titans, when he posted a 5-1 record in six games. Prior to turning pro, the Cleveland, OH native attended Robert Morris University, where he recorded 39 victories over the course of his four-year collegiate career.

The Nailers visit the South Carolina Stingrays on Saturday at 7:05, before returning home on Tuesday at 6:00 against the Reading Royals.
