December 28, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Ontario Reign News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The Ontario Reign (20-4-1-3, back-to-back Pacific Division Champions and proud affiliate of the NHL's Los Angeles Kings and Winnipeg Jets, topped the Alaska Aces (17-8-1-0) by a 4-2 score before a crowd of 4,492 on Friday at Sullivan Arena.
The Reign would victimize Roy again early in the second, as Matt White stripped the Aces goaltender of the puck while he roamed from the safety of his crease. White fed Mario Lamoureux in the slot for a one-timer at 0:42. The goal was Lamoureux's 11th of the year.
Michael Hutchinson would be stellar, robbing Tim Coffman with a glove save during a two-on-one opportunity for the Aces not long after. Several minutes later, Hutchinson would turn aside Mathew Sisca on a breakaway opportunity to preserve the 2-0 lead.
Alaska would finally get on the board when Coffman's shot from a curl-and-drag maneuver at 17:20 of the second period beat Hutchinson to the glove side.
The Aces would start the third strong, as Nick Mazzolini scored on a wrap-around at just 0:12 to tie the score at 2-2. Alaska would continue with a run of seven consecutive shots before the Reign managed a shot on goal midway through the period.
The tide would turn in favor of the Reign when Jake Hauswirth received a pass from Matthew Register out of the left corner. Hauswirth powered his way to the net and managed to sneak the puck underneath the blocker side of Roy to restore the lead for Ontario once again at 10:09.
The Aces would again apply pressure late in the third period, but Hutchinson continued to make a number of great saves to slam the door on Alaska. Everett Sheen would bury an empty-net goal at 19:51 to seal the win for the Reign.
With the victory, Ontario improved its current road win streak to nine straight games, and matched its record for fastest 20 wins by reaching the benchmark in its 28th game of the season, originally set in 2012-13. That Reign club, however, went 20-7-1-0, good for only 41 points, and had only garnered nine of its first 20 wins on the road.
Hutchinson picked up the win with 37 saves; Roy took the loss for the Aces with 18 saves.
Three Stars:
1. ONT - Jake Hauswirth
2. AK - Tim Coffman
3. ONT - Michael Hutchinson
