Wheeling Nailers News Release

WHEELING, WV - The Wheeling Nailers took one point in Friday night's game against the conference leading Toledo Walleye, but when they look back at it, they will definitely wish they had gotten a second. Toledo rallied from a 1-0 deficit in the third period, then scored on each of their final three shootout attempts, climbing back from two goals down to defeat Wheeling, 2-1 at WesBanco Arena. Cody Wydo had the lone goal in regulation for the Nailers, while Brian Foster and Jake Paterson turned in spectacular efforts between the pipes.

After a scoreless first period which saw the two teams combine for 17 shots, it was the Nailers who finally broke through with the opening goal at the 3:07 mark of the middle frame. Adam Krause swung the puck around to the left point, where Paul Cianfrini lengthened up on his stick, chopping a pass into the slot. The puck landed in a perfect spot for Cody Wydo to spin and whack a shot through Jake Paterson. With the goal, the reigning ECHL Player of the Week registered his eighth point in the last four games.

Unfortunately, the lead did not last for the entire evening, as Toledo got the equalizer with 5:03 remaining in regulation. Scott Czarnowczan stole a clearing attempt in the high part of the zone, eventually connecting with Austin Wuthrich, who fed Dominic Zombo for a backhand goal from the right side of the crease.

Both teams battled hard to earn a point in regulation, and each side came up with glorious opportunities to end the game in overtime. Brian Foster stopped a breakaway by Josh Shalla, while Jake Paterson turned away a 3-on-1 rush with the shot coming from Derek Army.

The contest progressed to a shootout, where the Nailers looked good early, as Anton Zlobin and Riley Brace scored on the first two shots. However, the Walleye pulled themselves up off of the mat, finding the net on each of their last three shots by Shane Berschbach, Kyle Bonis, and Tyler Sikura for the 2-1 win.

The two netminders were splendid. Jake Paterson got the win for Toledo, blocking away 29 of the 30 shots he faced. Brian Foster suffered the shootout defeat, despite denying 24 of the 25 attempts sent his way.

The Nailers will continue their homestand on Saturday night, when they clash with the Kalamazoo Wings at 7:35. Duck Dynasty Night will now take place on April 1st. Fans with tickets for Saturday can use them on Saturday, in addition to being able to exchange them for tickets of equal or lesser value, subject to availability on April 1st. On Sunday, the Nailers will face Norfolk at 4:05 on a Family Funday with McDonald's $5 Kids Tickets, a post game skate with the team, Mascot Mania, and Pups 'N Pucks (bring your dog to the game).
