Full Moon over Indy in Overtime
March 11, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Evansville IceMen News Release
EVANSVILLE, IN - It felt like a playoff game Friday at Indiana Farmers Coliseum between the Evansville IceMen and Indy Fuel, and for both teams fighting for a playoff spot, it essentially was one. The IceMen won their first-ever game in Indianapolis 2-1 in overtime, thanks to a goal 31 seconds in to the extra period by Nathan Moon.
The goaltenders stole the show in the first period, as IceMen goalie Christoffer Bengtsberg made 12 saves and Fuel goaltender Mac Carruth stopped 14 shots. Evansville's power play received two opportunities, but Indy killed off both penalties in the scoreless frame.
Three straight odd-man rushes in transition led to Indy's first goal, when Peter Schneider set up Cody Sharib for a one-timer at the midway point of the second period. With 4:58 left in the stanza, Alex Wideman fed a pass from behind the net out front for Ryan Penny, who snapped the tying goal past Carruth.
After a scoreless third period, the teams skated into overtime for the first time in ten meetings this season. Moon buried the game-winning goal past Carruth's blocker on a wrist shot from the slot just 31 seconds into the extra period. The IceMen now trail the Fuel by just three points with 14 games to play and two games in hand. Bengtsberg made a career-high 38 saves in the win.
The IceMen and Fuel will complete their season series Saturday at 7:15pm at the Ford Center, and Evansville wraps up a four-game week against the Quad City Mallards at 5:15pm Sunday at the Ford Center.
