Evansville IceMen News Release
LAST QUACK
The Evansville IceMen and Quad City Mallards battled Wednesday in a back-and-forth thriller at the Ford Center that saw four lead changes. Ultimately, the Mallards edged the IceMen 5-4 thanks to a third period penalty shot goal by Matt Carey and late breakaway goal from Zach Pochiro. Evansville received goals from Matthew Zay, Mike Duco, Nathan Moon and Troy Rutkowski, while rookie Alex Wideman racked up three assists in his first game back from injury.
WE'RE GOING STREAKING
IceMen rookie forward Jordan Sims picked up another assist Wednesday against Quad City, giving the Fort Wayne, IN native a career-high six-game point streak. Sims also has assists in five straight games, which gives him the longest streaks of the season for the IceMen in both categories. Meanwhile, Moon has points in five consecutive games, and defenseman Chris Rumble has a three-game assist streak.
DEADLINE DEAL
Evansville acquired defenseman Brendan Ellis and future considerations in a trade with the South Carolina Stingrays before the ECHL Trade Deadline Thursday for defenseman Spencer Humphries. Ellis scored six goals and added 19 assists in 49 games for the Stingrays, with three power play goals and a plus-3 rating this season. The 27-year-old previously played four seasons at Merrimack College before turning pro in March 2014. Humphries had two goals and 16 assists in 54 games with the IceMen.
UP AND DOWN
The AHL's Binghamton Senators returned goaltender Scott Greenham to Evansville on loan Thursday after his third stint with the B-Sens. The Ottawa, ON native is 7-5-2 with a 2.62 goals-against average and .922 save percentage in 14 appearances this year in Evansville. Binghamton also recalled forward Daultan Leveille for the first time. The St. Catherines, ON native led the IceMen with 21 goals and added 18 assists in 49 games with Evansville.
RE-FUELED
The Indy Fuel announced the firing of Head Coach Scott Hillman on Monday after the team lost seven of their last ten games and dropped out of a Western Conference playoff spot with 13 games to play. Assistant Coach Bernie John will take over for the rest of the season and makes his debut as Interim Head Coach on Friday against Evansville at Indiana Farmers Coliseum. The Fuel turned some heads last week in trading away goaltender Shane Owen, but received talented young goalie Mac Carruth soon thereafter from their AHL affiliate in Rockford. Indy is five points behind Tulsa for the eighth spot in the playoff race.
HOME FAIR ADVANTAGE
Since joining the ECHL as an expansion team in 2014-15, the Fuel has never lost to the IceMen at home on the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis. Indy is 8-0-0 all-time against Evansville at Indiana Farmers Coliseum and has won all four meetings this year at home. Friday's contest will be the final matchup of the season in Indianapolis, before the two teams wrap up the season series at the Ford Center on Saturday.
FAMILIAR ROAST
The Quad City Mallards come to the Ford Center for the fifth and final time this season Sunday at 5:15pm. Four of the first five meetings between the IceMen and Mallards have been decided by one goal, with the only other outcome being a 6-4 victory for Quad City on New Year's Eve. Evansville is in search of its first-ever home win against the Mallards in the ECHL. The IceMen last beat Quad City at the Ford Center on March 23, 2012, when the two teams faced off in the old Central Hockey League.
BABY RACES SATURDAY
During the first intermission of Saturday's IceMen game against the Indy Fuel at 7:15pm, Evansville will feature its first-ever baby races. There will be a crawlers division and walkers division. After the game, Evansville's NAPA warmup jerseys that have been worn by the players will be autographed and auctioned off at the Ford Center.
