Mallards Notes

Last Game

Zach Pochiro, who also had an assist, snapped a 4-4 tie at 13:23 of the third period and the Mallards went on to claim a wild 5-4 victory over the host Evansville IceMen Wednesday night.

Race

With Wednesday night's win, the Mallards, who are in ninth place in the Western Conference, moved within one point of the Tulsa Oilers, who occupy the eighth and final playoff spot in the Conference.

Busy

Tonight's game is the first of three in three nights for the Mallards.

On the Road Again

The Mallards Wednesday night began a stretch of six straight road games. After taking on the Cyclones tonight and tomorrow evening and returning to Evansville Sunday night, the Mallards will meet Fort Wayne twice next week.

Road Warriors

Wednesday night's win was the Mallards' third straight road victory.

Shorthanded

The Mallards have scored four shorthanded goals in their last four games. Matt Carey scored the Mallards' eighth shorthanded goal of the season on a penalty shot Wednesday night. The Mallards now are now tied for fifth in the ECHL in shorthanded goals.

Happy Hunting Ground

The Mallards have gone 4-0-0 in Evansville this season. They have scored at least five goals in three of those four games.

Between the Pipes

Brody Hoffman made 29 saves to earn the win in goal Wednesday night.

Leader of the Pack

Carey scored on a third period penalty shot Wednesday night after failing to convert the Mallards' only prior penalty shot this season January 10 against Fort Wayne. Carey, who also picked up an assist Wednesday night, has recorded 22 points (11 goals and 11 assists) in his last 17 games and leads the Mallards with 19 goals on the season. Carey is the only Mallard averaging at least a point per game: he has 35 points in 34 games.

Arch Madness

Olivier Archambault Wednesday night scored his fifth goal in his last five games. Archambault has notched seven points (five goals and two assists) in his last six games.

Rook

Matt Neal has scored in each of the Mallards' last three games, recorded points in six straight games (4-2-6) and totaled ten points (four goals and six assists) in his last ten games. By scoring Wednesday night Neal became the first Mallard to reach 40 points this season. He is tied for eighth among ECHL rookies in points.

Little Big Man

Vladimir Nikiforov Wednesday night scored his second power play goal in as many games and extended his point-scoring streak to four straight games (2-3-5).

Special Teams

While the Mallards have scored power play goals in each of their last two games they have given up ten goals on their opponents' last 27 power plays. They rank sixteenth in the ECHL on both the power play (16.6 percent) and penalty kill (83.7 percent).

Milestones

Mike Monfredo has played 259 career games for the Mallards and is closing in on Rick Emmett (264) for eighth place in team history...Nikiforov has 293 career points.

Head to Head

The Mallards have gone 3-3-1 against the Cyclones this season and have gone 1-1-1 in Cincinnati. They have gone 3-5-1 all-time against the Cyclones and 1-1-1 on the road. The Mallards and Cyclones will meet a total of 11 times this season.

Ins and Outs

Tanner Eberle (upper body) was activated from injured reserve Wednesday and returned to the Mallards' lineup Wednesday night in Evansville after missing the Mallards' prior 11 games... Jake Baker returned to the Mallards' lineup Wednesday night after missing last Saturday's game against Wichita (upper body).

Welcome to the Show

Goaltender Steve Michalek, who started the season with the Mallards, yesterday was recalled by the National Hockey League's Minnesota Wild from the Iowa Wild of the American Hockey League under emergency conditions. That recall is the Michalek's first NHL call-up.
