WHEELING, W.Va. - Goaltender David Brown denied all four Reading shooters in a shootout, plus a third period penalty shot, and the Wheeling Nailers came back from a 2-goal deficit to defeat the Royals in a shootout Saturday night at WesBanco Arena, 5-4.
Chris Margott, signed today, propelled the Nailers to the victory when he scored the first goal in the shootout, beating Royals goaltender Beau Erickson high on a forehand shot. Brown shut the Royals down the rest of the way, securing the win for the Nailers.
Dan Rudisuela gave the Royals an early lead at the 4:28 mark of the first period on his power play goal. The Nailers evened the score a minute later when Reid Cashman scored a power play goal on a snap shot from the blue line. Billy Ryan and Andrew Lord were credited with the assists.
Reading took a 2-1 lead into the locker room at the end of the first period thanks to Tyler Doig's goal at the 13:18 mark.
Wheeling's own Bryan Ewing knotted the score at 2-2 early in the second period when he beat Reading goaltender Beau Erickson on his glove side with a wrist shot thanks to a nice centering pass from Ryan. However, Tom Sawatske and Doig went on to score second period goals for the Royals, who took a 4-2 lead into the third.
Wheeling rallied in the third and sent the contest into overtime on goals by Jordan Morrison and Ryan. Morrison's goal, which was assisted by Tommy Goebel and Cashman, came on the power play at the 3:17 mark of the third period.
Brown, who made 22 saves, slammed the door on Vince Rocco with just over 10 minutes to play in the game when he was awarded a penalty shot. Ryan went on to score the equalizer on a rebound with less than six minutes remaining in regulation. Ryan's goal, his ninth of the season, was assisted by Ewing and Morrison.
The Nailers conclude their 3-game weekend home stand tomorrow when they get a rematch with the Reading Royals. Faceoff is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. Tomorrow is Sunday Family Funday at WesBanco Arena, where fans have the opportunity to skate with the Nailers after the game. Fans should bring their own skates and gloves to participate. Tomorrow is also Pups N Pucks Day, where fans can bring their dogs to the game for free.
