Bakersfield Condors News Release

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Bakersfield Condors scored three times in the first period and rolled to a 4-1 win over the Utah Grizzlies in front of 5,311 fans at Rabobank Arena Friday night.

The Condors (29-30-7, 65pts) jumped out to a roaring start in the first period, putting three goals up on the board. LW Mark Derlago potted his 28th of the season just 71 seconds into the game. Just a few minutes later, F Brett Pilkington notched his 9th of the year, taking advantage of a Utah turnover down low to make it 2-0. In the final minute of the period, D Scotty Balan notched his first goal of the campaign by rifling home a loose puck with just 26 seconds left. Bakerfield outshot Utah (26-25-16, 68pts), 17-7 in the stanza.

The two clubs exchanged tallies in the middle frame. Rookie F Tom May, who was coming off a four-goal game Thursday night in Stockton, netted his 30th of the season at 11:30 to cut into the Condors lead. But just 10 seconds later, C Dave Bonk followed it up with his 28th of the season to regain the three-goal cushion. The Condors racked up an additional 14 shots in the period with G Yutaka Fukufuji stopping 16 shots through 40 minutes of play.

The Condors held down the fort in the third frame, keeping Utah to just seven shots on goal and keeping them off the board. The victory put the Condors in a tie with Stockton in points, but just one win behind them in the standings, setting the stage for a pivotal matchup on Saturday. Bakersfield improved to 15-4-1 in their last 20 games, and 9-2-1 in their last 12 home games.
