
Idaho scores three goals in second and third periods on way to 7-1 victory

Victoria, BC - In a Saturday night match-up the Victoria Salmon Kings and Idaho Steelheads met in the third of a four-game set at the Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre in front of 6,314 spectators. Goaltender Julien Ellis started in net for the Salmon Kings, while the Steelheads countered with Rejean Beauchemin.
The Salmon Kings nearly got on the scoreboard first while on the power play in the opening frame, but was waived off as Sean O'Connor high stick the puck past Beauchemin. The Steelheads would take the first lead of the game at the 18:21 mark. With the man advantage Idaho worked the puck along the boards until Marty Flichel leaned into a slap shot from the point and beat a screened Ellis top corner. That's how the first period would end with a 1-0 Steelhead lead.
Idaho would add to their lead just 2:08 into the middle frame. Adam Welsh collected his first goal of the season by beating a screened Ellis with a heavy point shot. Just over three minutes later, Idaho would again extend their lead. Dan Welch came down the wing and shot low glove side while in stride to collect his fourth goal of the season. The Steelheads kept coming at the Salmon Kings, Ellis would stop Travis Wight's initial point shot but kicked out a rebound that Brandon Svendsen batted home out of mid air at the 8:02 mark. The teams would skate into the second intermission with the Steelheads up 4-0.
Idaho went on the power play during the first minute of play of the third period and would capitalize to take a commanding 5-0 lead. Darrell Hay got a pass from McKnight and wired a slap shot top left corner that was his fifth tally of the year. The Salmon Kings got on the scoreboard at 5:08 mark to tighten the gap. Adam Taylor chipped a lead pass up to Shaun Landolt during a penalty kill, Landolt raced in with a Steelhead chasing him down and backhanded a low shot passed Beauchemin to get his 11th goal of the season. Bryan McGregor was awarded a penalty shot at the 10:01 mark and would give the Steelheads a 6-1 lead. McGregor would add a late goal for Idaho. Steelheads 7 Salmon Kings 1.
Victoria finished 0/5 = 0.0% on the power play, while Idaho finished 2/8= 25%. The Steelheads outshot the Salmon Kings 29-34.
The Salmon Kings and Steelheads meet again tomorrow, March 22nd for the finale of the four-game set. Puck drop is at 1:05 p.m. The Salmons Kings travel to Stockton and Bakersfield to finish off the regular season before the start of the 2009 Kelly Cup Playoffs.
