Las Vegas, NV - The Las Vegas Wranglers (31-26-8, 70 Points) defeated the Ontario Reign (35-26-5, 75 Points) 5-2 in front of 4,222 fans Friday night at the Orleans Arena. Hugo Carpentier and Mat Robinson each tallied a goal and an assist as the Wranglers picked up their fourth straight win. Forwards Justin Taylor, Chris Ferraro, and Kelly Czuy also scored for Las Vegas, who improved to 19-10-2 at home this season. Goalie Glenn Fisher stopped 25 of 27 shots to improve to 11-5-2 this season. Winger Brad Mehalko added a goal and an assist for Ontario. Goalie Jeff Zatkoff made 20 saves, as the Reign's winless skid fell to four games (0-3-1). Las Vegas will host the Alaska Aces on Saturday night at 7:30 PM.
The Wranglers picked up an early first-period lead taking a 1-0 lead just 3:19 into play. Forward Justin Taylor put in a rebound for his 12th goal of the season, with assists from Mick Lawrence and Hugo Carpentier. The Reign answered back 9:39 into the first period, tying the game 1-1. Forward Brad Mehalko fired a slap shot from just beyond the right circle for his eighth goal of the season. Mehalko's goal snapped Las Vegas goalie Glenn Fisher's scoreless streak at 176:57, the longest streak by a Wranglers goalie in team history.
Las Vegas regained the lead at 2-1, scoring 6:30 into the middle period. Forward Chris Ferraro tallied his 20th goal of the season, snapping in a rebound from the right side of the Ontario net. The Wranglers padded the lead to 3-1 at 13:37. Playing in his first pro game, defenseman Mat Robinson scored his first professional goal to give the Wranglers a two-goal lead. Just 15-seconds later, Hugo Carpentier fired in his eighth goal of the season for the 4-1 lead.
In the third period, Ontario's Dale Reinhardt cut the Las Vegas lead in half, at 4-2. Forwards Geoff Walker and Brad Mehalko set up Reinhardt's 11th goal of the season at 15:27. Las Vegas answered back, regaining a three-goal lead at 17:45 of the third period. Forward Kelly Czuy darted into the offensive zone and lifted a backhander up and into the net for his eighth goal of the season to make it 5-2.
The Wranglers will also host the Alaska Aces on Saturday, March 21st at 7:30 PM. The first 2,000 fans receive a Wranglers trading card set, sponsored by Studio Blue. Las Vegas will play in Ontario at 5:00 PM on Sunday. The Wranglers will return to the Orleans Arena on Tuesday at 9:05 PM to host "Over 18" Night.
