Berge's Goal Lifts Stingrays Over Sea Wolves 3-2 in Overtime

North Charleston, SC - Mick Berge picked a good time to get his second professional goal, scoring in overtime to lead the South Carolina Stingrays to a 3-2 win over the Mississippi Sea Wolves at the North Charleston Coliseum.

"I liked the way we came out tonight," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "We made a couple of mistakes which led both Mississippi goals, but overall we came out to compete tonight."

The Rays continued with their solid play in the first period getting on the board first. While killing off their second penalty of the night, Keith Johnson got loose on a breakaway and fired a shot over the glove hand of Ryan Munce giving the Rays the 1-0 lead. The goal was Johnson's 18th and was assisted by Travis Morin at 15:10 of the period.

The Rays struck again in the second period giving themselves a 2-0 lead on Johnson's second goal of the game. The goal came on the power play from Josh Godfrey and Morin at 4:33 of the period. But the Sea Wolves were not about to roll over and they got on the board at 15:25 on a goal by Alexandre Parent. The goal by Parent snapped a scoreless streak by goalie James Reimer of 174:19. Just over three minutes later the Sea Wolves would strike again on a goal by defenseman Chris Zarb. The goal tied things up at two heading into the third period.

In the third period, the Rays and Wolves battled to a scoreless tie forcing the game to overtime tied up at two apiece. The Rays went on an early overtime power play after Mississippi was called for too many men on the ice, but could not score. It wasn't until later in the period that the Rays went back on the power play after a Mike Nesdill holding minor. This time on the man advantage South Carolina put the game away. At 3:15 of the overtime Mick Berge notched his second professional goal in his second professional game to win it 3-2. The goal was assisted by Pierre-Luc O'Brien and Johnson.

The winning goaltender was Reimer who stopped 30 of the 32 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was Munce who stopped 32 of the 35 shots he faced. The Rays went 2-4 on the power play while killing off all five short handed situations they faced.

The Stingrays continue this weekend on Sunday night against the Mississippi Sea Wolves.
