Nailers Acquire Chedoruk from Condors

WHEELING, WV - The Wheeling Nailers, the "AA" affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Philadelphia Flyers, announced today that they have acquired forward Justin Chwedoruk from the Bakersfield Condors in exchange for rookie Michael Handza.

Chwedoruk, 23, is in his third professional season and first in the ECHL. He has registered 11 points (7g, 4a) in 19 games while playing for the Condors this season. During the 2006-07 campaign, Chwedoruk was with Quad City Mallards of the United Hockey League, playing in 71 games and totaling 68 points (24g, 44a) and 110 penalty minutes. He finished sixth on team and 15th in the league in points, and was tied for 10th in the league in assists.

"Justin will bring instant energy to our team," said Nailers President Jim Brooks. "We are really looking forward to getting him onto the ice for the Nailers this weekend."

Chwedoruk spent his rookie season in the Central Hockey League where he split time between the Lubbock Cotton Kings and the Oklahoma City Blazers. Before turning pro, the native of St. Albert, Alberta played for the St. Albert Saints and Spruce Grove Saints of the Alberta Junior Hockey League in 2002-03 and 2004-05. He played total of 98 AJHL games, amassing 114 points (49g, 65a) and 159 penalty minutes. His highest career point total was in 2002-03 with the Saints when he racked up 78 points (35g, 43a) in 56 games. He also played one season for the University of Nebraska - Omaha (NCAA) in 2003-04.

Handza, 23, had tallied three assists in the first 19 games of the season for the Nailers. The rookie had joined the Nailers after winning back-to-back NCAA National Championships with the University of Denver.

The Wheeling Nailers return to action on Friday to face the Dayton Bombers at 7pm. They return to Wheeling for a pair of home games on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's game against the Cincinnati Cyclones will be at 8pm and televised live on WTOV9.
