Monarchs Defeated By Phantom Menace

MANCHESTER, NH - The Manchester Monarchs picked up a point as they fell to the Philadelphia Phantoms in a 3-2 shootout in front of 6,048 fans at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Friday night.

Manchester (2-5-0-2) is ranked seventh in the Atlantic Division with six points. Philadelphia (7-5-0-0) is in third place in the East Division with 14 points.

Right wing Teddy Purcell scored the lone shootout goal for the Monarchs as center Jared Ross and defenseman Nate Guenin found the back of the net for the Phantoms.

During the Monarchs third power play of the first period, right wing Bud Holloway collected his third tally of the season to give Manchester the lead heading into the locker room. Phantoms defenseman Oskars Bartulis was in the penalty box for hooking and the Monarchs were cycling the puck Philadelphia's zone. Left wing Vladimir Dravecky, positioned along the left wing boards, centered the puck to right wing Trevor Lewis playing deep at the center point. Lewis fired a slap shot that deflected off of Holloway and over goaltender Scott Munroe for the first goal of the game at 19:19 of the opening frame.

The Phantoms evened the game at 1-1 at the 3:30 mark of the second period with defenseman Danny Syvret's third goal of the season. Monarchs center Gabe Gauthier sat in the penalty box for slashing and Philadelphia went to work. Defenseman Jason DeSantis fed the puck to Syvret at the center point. Syvret wound up and blasted a slap shot that bounced through traffic and quivered as it flew over Monarchs goaltender Jonathan Bernier's glove for the Phantoms first goal of the game. Ross picked up an assist on Syvret's goal.

Center Marty Murray gave the Monarchs their one-goal lead once again at 6:16 of the middle stanza. Dravecky shot the puck on Munroe from the face-off circle hash marks. Munroe made the initial save but Murray came streaking in for the rebound that snuck in through the five-hole of the goaltender. Holloway assisted on Murray's first goal of the season.

Before heading into the locker room for the second intermission, Philadelphia tied the game at 2-2 in the waning minutes of the second frame. Skating on the power play, the Phantoms gave the puck to defenseman Sean Curry at the point. Curry's slap shot deflected off of center Jonathan Matsumoto's stick and over Bernier for his fifth tally of the season. Ross picked up his second assist of the night on Matsumoto's tying goal.

Bernier (1-1-2) took his second shootout loss of the season stopping 31-of-33 shots. Munroe (4-1-0) earned his fourth victory with 33 saves.

Manchester went 1-for-5 with the man advantage. Philadelphia was 2-for-5 on the power play.
