Portland Pirates News Release

Portland, ME - It took the Pirates 65 minutes and a shootout to come away with a 2-1 win over the Springfield Falcons, but Portland got the job done to pick up a point for the seventh consecutive game. Tim Kennedy saw his point streak end, but scored the winner in a shootout on the third sudden death attempt by the Pirates. Portland netminder Adam Dennis made 26 saves on 27 shots in the win.

The Pirates played in front of a crowd of 4,706 fans, including supporters of the 2008 United Way of Greater Portland Annual Campaign. During the first intermission, the Pirates presented a check for $21,000 to United Way. The money was raised through the sale of United Way flex tickets, in addition to $6,500 raised from the Fifth Annual Crackers Golf Classic on October 6th.

The first period was a defensive struggle, and both Pirates goaltender Adam Dennis and Falcons netminder Devan Dubnyk made a few key saves to keep things tied at 0. Portland went 0-for-2 on the power play in the first period, while the Falcons squandered their only man advantage.

The pace stayed slow early on into the second period, before the Pirates offense got a jump start from the power play. Mark Mancari took a feed from Nathan Gerbe, skated into the slot, and put a backhander past Dubnyk to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead. Gerbe got the lone assist on the play.

The Falcons found the equalizer four and a half minutes into the third period when Colin McDonald took a bad angle shot that snuck between Dennis and the post and caromed in. Neither team could break the tie in regulation, so the two teams headed to overtime. Despite outshooting Springfield 5-0 in overtime, Falcons netminder Devan Dubnyk made huge saves on Mathieu Darche and Nathan Gerbe to send the game into a shootout.

Mathieu Darche, Nathan Gerbe, and Tim Kennedy scored in the shootout. However, the Falcons found shootout tallies from Gilbert Brule, Rob Schremp and Viacheslav Trukhno. In the sudden death, Tim Kennedy finally scored the game winner as the Pirates picked up the 2-1 win.

Portland goaltender Adam Dennis made 26 saves in the win to improve to 4-1-0-0. Springfield netminder Devan Dubnyk made 32 saves in the loss and drops to 5-4-0-1.
