B-Sens Crush Crunch for First Home Win
November 7, 2008 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Binghamton Senators News Release
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Binghamton Senators snapped their four-game skid with a commanding 4-1 victory over I-81 rival Syracuse on Friday night at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena before a sellout crowd of 4,710 fans.
After the B-Sens fought off an early 5-on-3 Syracuse power play, rookie Zack Smith jammed home a loose puck at the right post for his team-leading seventh goal of the year. With Binghamton operating on the power play, winger Ryan Shannon crashed the front of the net following his own shot with a touch pass to Smith at the post.
At the mid-way point of the second period, Clay Wilson evened the score at 1 with a power-play tally of his own, firing a wrist shot through traffic from the high slot to beat netminder Brian Elliott on the glove side.
Ilya Zubov answered for Binghamton nearly five and a half minutes later--and extended his point streak (3+2) to three games--with a shot from the upper right side of net after Josh Hennessy poked the puck free from a mini pile near the blue line.
Forty-eight seconds later, newcomer Drew Fata scored his first goal of the season to give the B-Sens a two-goal lead with a one-timer from the left point that found its way through a screen and past netminder Dan LaCosta's glove hand. Defenseman Tomas Kudelka and left wing Shawn Weller assisted on the play.
A second period intermission didn't stop the action. On a 5-3 power play at 18:30, defenseman Brendan Bell scored his third goal of the season on Shannon's second assist of the night, following a pass from defenseman Mattias Karlsson.
Bell (3+4) and Shannon (4+5) extended their point streaks to seven games each. Ilya Zubov has tallied in each of the B-Sens three games against Syracuse this season, while adding one assist.
Netminder Brian Elliott turned away 30 shots to earn his fourth win of the season for Binghamton. The B-Sens penalty kill unit stood tall, stopping eight of nine Crunch power plays.
The B-Sens look to make it two straight tomorrow night at 7:05 when the Worchester Sharks visit the Arena for the first time in two years. Saturday's game is also Roberts Eyecare Hat Night, where the first 2,500 fans through the door will receive a one-of-kind B-Sens hat. The game will also feature the championship game of table hockey tournament, during the first intermission.
