Monarchs Battle Back, But Fall Short to Royals, 5-4

MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Manchester Monarchs played from behind the entire game, despite capitalizing on the power play twice, and fell, 5-4, to the Reading Royals Friday night at SNHU Arena.

The Royals opened the scoring at 5:20 of the first period when David Drake netted his first goal in the season. Drake sniped a slap shot from the top-left circle to go top-shelf over Monarchs goaltender, Chris Driedger's glove, to make the score, 1-0.

The Royals took an early two-goal lead when Alex Roos netted his second goal of the season at 7:16 of the first period. Josh MacDonald left Roos the puck at the high slot, where he put a shot past the glove of Driedger, to make the score, 2-0.

The Monarchs cut into the Royals lead when Jack Nevins scored his first goal of the season at 9:21 of the first period. Jared Fiegl threw the puck to the front of the net where at the top of the paint, Nevins let a quick shot go over Royals goaltender, Callum Booth, to make the score, 2-1.

The Royals regained their two-goal cushion when Chris McCarthy netted his 7th goal of the season at 9:59 of the first period. On a breakaway, McCarthy skated to the top of the crease and snuck a shot five-hole, through Driedger, to make the score, 3-1.

The Monarchs bounced back with a power-play goal at 13:19 of the first period when Cory Ward scored his 7th goal of the season. Daniil Miromanov took a shot from the top of the right circle where in front of the net, Ward picked up the rebound and beat a diving Booth, to make the score, 3-2.

The Royals added to their lead when Josh MacDonald netted his 13th goal of the season at 17:18 of the first period. McCarthy slid the puck to MacDonald and from the low right slot, went top-shelf over Driedger's stick, to make the score, 4-2.

The Monarchs cut into the Royals lead when Cory Ward netted his second goal of the game, 8th goal of the season, at 6:48 of the second period. From the low circle, Michael Doherty found Cory Ward crashing the net where he slid a five-hole goal past Booth, to make the score, 4-3.

Reading took another two-goal lead, for the third time of the game, when Roos netted his 2nd goal of the game, 3rd goal of the season, at 13:55 of the second period. McCarthy backhanded a pass to Roos at the high slot for a quick shot past Monarchs goaltender, Danny Tirone, to make the score, 5-3.

The Monarchs answered back when Miromanov scored his 2nd goal of the season at 18:53 of the second period. On the power play, Pavel Jenys found Mironmanov inside the left circle where he put a shot, top-shelf over Booth's stick, to make the score, 5-4.
