Memphis Late Comeback Falls Short in Series Opener with Jacksonville

MEMPHIS, TN - The Memphis Redbirds dropped game one of a six-game series with the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp at AutoZone Park by the final score of 8-6 on Tuesday afternoon.

Memphis scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning thanks to a pair of home runs. First baseman Luken Baker led off the inning with a solo shot to left-center field, his fourth of the season and second in as many games.

Later in the inning, third baseman Juan Yepez blasted his ninth of the year, a three-run homer to bring Memphis within a run.

On the day, second baseman Nolan Gorman, Baker (2) and Yepez (3) each added to their RBI totals.

Drew VerHagen made a rehab start on Tuesday, lasting 1.2 innings. Conner Thomas (1-1), the original scheduled starter, pitched 3.1 innings in relief and was credited with the loss.

In relief, Zach McAllister continued his recent success. The right-hander tossed 2.0 innings and struck out four batters without allowing a run.

The Memphis Redbirds (14-11) return to AutoZone Park on Wednesday afternoon to take on the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp for game two of a six-game series at 12:05 a.m. CDT.
