Charlotte Knights News Release

(LAWRENCEVILLE, GA) -- Catcher Carlos Pérez launched two home runs, but the Charlotte Knights dropped the opening game of a six-game series against the Gwinnett Stripers by a score of 11-7 on Tuesday afternoon from Coolray Field. Despite the loss, the Charlotte offense out-hit the Stripers, 13-11.

Pérez continued his hot-hitting and added to his team lead in long balls with his first career two-homer game at the Triple-A level. Pérez hit his sixth home run of the season -- a three-run shot -- in the top of the third inning. Two innings later, he launched a solo home run -- his seventh of the season. In all, the 25-year-old catcher went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, two home runs and four RBIs.

LHP Wes Benjamin started the game for the Knights and allowed seven runs on seven hits over just 3.2 innings pitched. Benjamin also walked four batters and fanned three. He did not factor in the decision. RHP Lincoln Henzman (0-1, 18.00), who was promoted to the Knights before the game from Double-A Birmingham, was saddled with the loss in his debut. He allowed four runs (two earned) on three hits over one inning of work.

Infielder Yolbert Sánchez had two hits on the day and has now hit safely in all seven games he's played in with the Knights since his promotion from Double-A on April 26. Infielder Danny Mendick had two hits in his return from Chicago and White Sox third baseman Yoán Moncada added a hit in his third rehab appearance of the season.

Gwinnett tallied five runs over the first two innings of the game and later had a big four-run sixth inning to pull away from the Knights in Tuesday's opener. The Stripers hit four home runs on the day. Catcher Chadwick Tromp had two of the team's home runs. He also scored three runs and drove home four runs.

The Knights will continue the series against the Gwinnett Stripers from Coolray Field on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. All six games in the series can be heard live on 730 The Game ESPN Charlotte and www.CharlotteKnights.com. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad will have the call for all of the action.
