MOOSIC, PA (May 1, 2022) - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders dropped a fourth consecutive game to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs on Sunday afternoon, 9-3. Estevan Florial went two for five with an RBI and finished the series 7-for-18 with five walks.
Manny Bañuelos made his third start of the season for the RailRiders and allowed two runs over four innings with four strikeouts. Lehigh Valley countered with Colton Eastman who gave up one run in 4.1 innings in his fifth start. Lehigh Valley took an early lead in the third inning on a run-scoring infield single from Dustin Peterson. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre answered immediately in the bottom half of the inning. Max McDowell led off the frame with a single and later scored on a wild pitch.
The tie didn't last long as Lehigh Valley went back ahead on a Will Toffey RBI single in the fourth. David McKay and Ron Marinaccio then combined to throw three shutout frames out of SWB's bullpen in the fifth through seventh innings.
The RailRiders rallied and jumped out in front in the seventh. Ryan LaMarre and Florial delivered back-to-back two-out, run-scoring hits to put Scranton/Wilkes-Barre ahead 3-2. LaMarre finished the day two for three. The IronPigs took the lead for good in the eighth inning after RBI singles from Bryson Stott and Drew Maggi made it 4-3. Lehigh Valley added five insurance runs in the ninth on two home runs. Braeden Ogle (1-1) earned his first win out of Lehigh Valley's bullpen. Reggie McClain (0-1) suffered the loss for SWB.
NEWS & NOTES
FIRST THINGS FIRST - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders are on the road to take on the Rochester Red Wings for their first series at Frontier Field this season. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre will make two trips to Rochester this season, seeing them again at the end of July. The RailRiders will welcome the Red Wings to PNC Field for a six-game series in June.
BIENVENIDOS (DE NUEVO) - The RailRiders have made multiple roster moves heading into the six-game series with the Rochester Red Wings. Miguel Andújar returned to the RailRiders after a brief stint with New York. Clarke Schmidt was also optioned and added to the roster. Relief pitcher Vinny Nittoli was placed on the seven day injured list. After making just twelve roster moves in the first four weeks of the season, the RailRiders have made eleven roster moves since April 26 (one week).
HAY THERE, HI THERE, HO THERE -Hayden Wesneski is slated to start the series opener. Last time out, Wesneski became the first RailRider this season to toss a quality start. He's the first Scranton/Wilkes-Barre starter to do that since September 30, 2021 when Clarke Schmidt did so against Rochester at Frontier Field. The righthander has allowed five earned runs over his last two starts and 10.1 IP. He went his first two outings that spanned 8.2 innings being charged with just one unearned run.
MY NAME IS JEF(RY) - Jefry Rodriguez takes the ball for Rochester. He will make his fifth start of the season in his now second season with the Red Wings. He made four starts against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in 2021 (and his career). He has gone 0-1 with a 5.00 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP against the RailRiders across 18.0 IP. Since tossing three shutout innings in his first start of the season against the Toledo Mud Hens on April 9, Rodriguez has allowed twelve earned runs across three outings and ten innings. 2022 is his tenth season in professional baseball. This his second stint in the Washington Nationals organization after spending 2019 with the then-Cleveland Indians (2012-2018, 2021-now with Washington).
THE NOT GOOD STUFF - The RailRiders enter this set with a four-game losing streak, during which they have been outscored 29-9. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre have only won or lost one game in a row once this season back on April 17 when they won a single game betwixt a six and three-game losing streak. Since winning the first four games of the season, SWB has gone 5-14 and have lost three straight series. At this point last season (23 games in), the RailRiders were 16-7.
STREAKY - Miguel Andújar returns to the RailRiders with a four-game hit streak... David Freitas has a six-game hit streak and a eight-game on base streak entering today... Rob Brantley has a four-game hit streak and six-game on base streak... Armando Alvarez enters this series with a four-game hit streak... Oswald Peraza snapped a five-game hitless streak Thursday with three hits including a home run. He has a four-game hit streak entering play... Ronald Guzmán's four-game on base streak was snapped Friday... David McKay has not been charged with a run in six straight outings, the longest for any RailRider reliever this season... Michael Gomez has not surrendered a run in three straight appearances...
QUICK HITS - Scranton/Wilkes-Barre has averaged 4.13 runs per game this season, but have averaged 5.09 runs against... When SWB scores four or fewer runs, they have a 1-11 record... RailRiders batters have struck out the fewest times in Triple-A Baseball (178)... The RailRiders did not finish the month of April with a winning record (9-13)... Scranton Wilkes-Barre entered the last series with Lehigh Valley with 11 stolen bases on the season as a team. They ended up stealing 11 bases in those six games... The RailRiders have not had a single series this season that did not feature a postponed game due to weather...
ON DECK - The RailRiders will be in Rochester throughout the week. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre will return to PNC Field on Tuesday, May 10 to host the Syracuse Mets for the first time this season. AROUND THE ORG - The Yankees (17-6) won their tenth straight game with a 3-2 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays (15-9). Gleyber Torres drove in all three runs, including the go-ahead run in the ninth to break a 2-2 tie. Jameson Taillon makes the start tonight at 7:07 PM against Alex Manoah... Jhony Brito and clutch hitting led the Somerset Patriots (14-7) to a 5-0 shutout win over the Portland Sea Dogs (10-11) at TD Bank Ballpark on Sunday afternoon. Brito ended up winning MiLB's Eastern League Pitcher Of The Week honors. The Patriots are at home hosting the New Hampshre Fisher Cats at 11:05 AM... The Hudson Valley Renegades (12-9) dropped the series finale to the Wilmington Blue Rocks (10-11) 8-6 on Sunday afternoon at Dutchess Stadium. Aaron Palensky hit his first home run of the season. The Renegades are on the road to face the Jersey Shore BlueClaws at 6:05 PM... The Tampa Tarpons (9-11) split a doubleheader with the Lakeland Flying Tigers (9-11) on Sunday. The Tarpons won game one by a 3-2 final and were shut out in game two 3-0. They're on the road to face the Bradenton Marauders at 6:30 PM...
