Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - Simon Watson scored the game winning goal 2:29 into third period and added an assist as the Missouri Mavericks defeated the Fort Wayne Komets, 2-1, in front of a sold out crowd of 5,800 at Independence Events Center. Derek Pallardy scored the Mavs' first goal; Carlyle Lewis added two assists and goaltender Rob Nolan earned his first victory of the season by stopping 21 of 22 shots. The Mavericks are now 5-4-2 on the season and will not play again until Friday, November 19 at Tulsa.
Brandon Naurato opened the scoring for Fort Wayne just 87 seconds into the game on assists from Derek Patrosso and Leo Thomas. The Komets controlled the first couple minutes of the game, but the Mavericks answered later in the period on Derek Pallardy's first goal of the season. Simon Watson came into the Komets' zone along the right wing on a two-on-two, and skated behind the goal on a wrap around effort and Pallardy banged home the rebound. The goal came at the 12:33 mark of the period and the teams remained tied through one period.
Neither team was able to light the lamp in the second period despite the Mavericks outshooting the Komets 16-9.
Watson scored the game winning goal only 2:29 into the third period on a nice individual effort. He picked up a loose puck to the left of Komets' goaltender Nick Boucher, moved the puck to his backhand and beat Boucher. The goal stood up for the Mavericks as they moved to 5-4-3 on the season.
Missouri outshot the Komets 41-23 marking the third straight game the Mavericks' have nearly doubled their opponent in shots. The Mavs killed all six of the Komets' power plays, but also finished 0-7 on the power play. It marked the first time in nine games Missouri did not convert on the power play.
The Mavericks will play a home-and-home against the Tulsa Oilers next weekend. They start in Tulsa on Friday, November 19 and come home to Independence Events Center on Saturday, November 20. Tickets for all remaining regular season home games are on sale now starting at just $14 per game. Single-game tickets are available through Ticketmaster. Mini-plans, season tickets and group tickets are available by calling (816) 252-7825, or visit www.MissouriMavericks.com for more information.
