Gems Win Third Straight 2-1 Over Evansville
November 13, 2010 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Dayton Gems News Release
Evansville, IN- After a thrilling 4-3 shootout win at Hara Arena last night over the Arizona Sundogs, the Dayton Gems took to the road for only the second time in ten games this season for a conference battle with the Evansville IceMen. Both teams were red hot coming into tonight's game with the Gems having won two straight (and five of their last seven) and the IceMen on a three-game winning streak of their own.
Donning their brand new black sweaters for the first time this season, the Gems were looking to be aggressive right off the opening face-off and generated three shots on goal within the first three minutes (including a scoring chance by Corey Couturier that hit the post) on IceMen starter David Wilson. Evansville was flat and took four penalties during the period that gave the Gems ample chances with the man advantage, but the IceMen penalty killers kept Dayton off the board. Tim Hartung broke the scoreless tie to give the Gems a 1-0 lead late in the first at the 18:13 mark and Jeff Jakaitis was back in between the pipes to stop all 11 IceMen shots and keep it 1-0 after the first 20 minutes of play.
The Gems would once again come out firing in the second and put enough pressure on the Evansville defense to earn a few more power play chances early on. Kyle Bochek pushed the lead to 2-0 with his first goal of the season when he completed a perfect tic-tac-toe passing play set up by line-mates Tom Boudreau and Erik Boisvert on the power play at the 7:00 mark. Evansville would cut the lead to one just over nine minutes later when Mark Cody deflected a shot from the point in behind Jakaitis to make it 2-1 with a little over three minutes to go. That goal seemed to give the IceMen the momentum and they continued to control the ice for the remainder of the period, but thanks to some solid team defense, the Gems skated off up by one going into the third.
The story of the third period would be both teams inability to capitalize on the other team's mistakes. The Gems sealed the fate of the IceMen when the killed off a monstrous 4:00 double minor penalty at the 7:28 mark. Jeff Jakaitis would come up with a number of big saves in the waning minutes and stopped 35 of 36 on the night to help the Gems to their third straight win 2-1 over Evansville.
With the victory, the Gems have now improve to 7-2-1 overall and 3-1-1 in 1-goal games this season. The line of Tim Hartung, Mike Vaskivuo and Corey Couturier finish the weekend with 10 points between them and both Derek MacIntyre and Jeff Jakaitis team up for a 3-0 record in net.
