Mudbugs Win Battle of the Bad Bounces

Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release

BOSSIER CITY, LA - The Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs scored three unanswered goals in the middle of the game to move in front to stay in a 4-3 win over the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees Friday night at the CenturyTel Center. On a night of crazy bounces, nearly every goal in the game was scored off either a strange re-direction or a rebound as the ‘Bugs improved to 4-3 at home and 9-4 overall this year.

Justin Aikins scored one goal and assisted on another by Steven Crampton, while Travis Clayton and David Rutherford also found the back of the net. Rutherford's ninth tally of the year kept him tied with Laredo's Daniel Koger for the CHL lead in goal scoring.

The Killer Bees started the game with two quick chances, but Travis Clayton opened the scoring for the Mudbugs after a Rio clearing attempt hit a partition in the glass and bounced right to him in front to set up his sixth goal of the year. Rio Grande Valley tied it two minutes later when Ryan McLeod's shot hit Jamie Milam in the face and trickled into the net. Brandon Smith gave the Bees a 2-1 lead on another odd play as his crossing pass caromed off Kevin Seibel's skate in front and past John DeCaro just 92 seconds after that.

Justin Aikins then tied the game at two for the ‘Bugs, sneaking a perfect wrist shot past Juliano Pagliero's blocker from the left circle after an errant pass deflected right to him off the skate of a Rio Grande Valley defender. Bossier-Shreveport then carried the momentum into the second period as Crampton jammed in a second-chance rebound to make it 3-2 Mudbugs at 6:39. Rutherford extended the lead to 4-2 after Pagliero left the rebound of a Jeff Martens' shot loose at the top of the goal crease to be tapped in for the eventual game-winning goal.

The Killer Bees cut into the lead later in the period when Brett Wilson deflected Darcy Campbell's backhand shot past DeCaro, and the score read 4-3 for the Mudbugs after two periods. The ‘Bugs killed off two Rio Grande Valley powerplays in third and made that lead hold up for their second straight one-goal win.

John DeCaro made 23 saves to improve to 2-1 this year as the Mudbugs were outshot 26-22. Juliano Pagliero stopped 18 shots but dropped to 5-2-2. Bossier-Shreveport was 0 for 5 on the powerplay, while Rio Grande Valley finished 0 for 3.

The Mudbugs will now prepare for another matchup with the rival Laredo Bucks on "Military Appreciation Night" tomorrow at 7:05. Join us as we honor the men and women of our nation's armed services on an entertaining night of hockey at the CTC!
