Arizona Sundogs News Release
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - The Arizona Sundogs earned a point in the standings for the second straight night, falling 2-1 in overtime Saturday to the Quad City Mallards in the fifth contest of a season-long eight-game road trip.
Arizona scored the game's first goal for just the second time this season and held a one-goal lead early into the third period before Mike McLean converted on the Mallards' seventh power play of the game, redirecting a shot through traffic past Doug Groenestege 4:20 into the third frame to tie the game at one.
Brandon Marino netted the game winner just over two minutes into overtime, collecting a pass from Joel Gasper from below the far circle before striding across the goal crease and sliding the puck past the outstretched leg of Groenestege.
Jason Williams opened scoring in the contest with his league-leading fifth power-play goal of the season, walking in from the near boards and snapping a shot past Adam Russo with 1:27 remaining in the first period. Kyle Hood extended his point streak to three games with his third assist in as many contests on the play.
Groenestege held the Mallards without a goal for nearly 44 minutes Saturday and turned aside 37 of 39 shots in his first start since an 8-1 defeat against the Evansville IceMen on Thursday. Russo made 27 saves in his second start of the season to earn the win.
Arizona finished 1-for-8 with the man advantage and held Quad City to one goal on 11 power play opportunities.
The Sundogs were shorthanded throughout the game, dressing just 13 skaters and two goalies as forward Adam Smyth and defenseman Jim Driscoll were held out of the lineup with undisclosed injuries.
Arizona (2-7-2) continues its season-long road trip Wednesday, Nov. 17 at 6:05pm (Arizona time) against the Bloomington PrairieThunder (6-2-0). Listen to the game live online at www.cattlecountryradio.com and on KDDL âCattle Country' 94.3FM.
