Weekend Preview- Gems Seek 3rd Straight Win Tonight
November 13, 2010 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Dayton Gems News Release
A pivotal game for both teams lies ahead tonight when the Dayton Gems travel to Evansville to take on the Icemen. Both teams are red hot and have won two in-a-row and both teams are currently tied in points in the Turner Conference standings with 13 points, good enough for second place behind Colorado with 17 in first. The Gems have played two fewer games than the IceMen and because of that they are listed ahead of Evansville in the standings even though the point total is the same. This is the second of 15 total meetings (8 home 7 away including the Gems opening night 3-1 victory in Dayton on October, 16th) and the first in Swonder Ice Arena. The Gems and IceMen will meet three more times out of their next five schedule games over the next two weeks.
SCOUTING REPORT ON EVANSVILLE:
This is a very dangerous team with the power play, they currently rank 3rd in the CHL at 25% and their penalty killing knows what to do as well, ranking them 4th at 86%. Two of the main reasons for the IceMen's early success are their top two scorers Nicklas Lindberg and Brian Bicek. Lindberg (18 points on 4G and 14A) is second in the entire league in scoring and Bicek (14 points on 6G and 8A) is ranked 10th in scoring. Evansville has defended their home ice very well, they are 4-0-1 at Swonder and are coming off of consecutive home wins over Arizona (8-1 on Thursday) and Fort Wayne (3-2 last night) . Matt Lundin is their number one goaltender and in eight games played, he has a 5-2-1 record, 2.63 goals against and .919 save percentage. The Gems did defeat Lundin on opening night in Dayton 3-1 so they have proven to have success over him on the first attempt.
GEMS GAME NIGHT:
The Gems are coming off of consecutive home wins as well over Fort Wayne (4-1 on Thursday) and Arizona (4-3 last night) and are 5-2-1 on home ice. They won their only previous road game played in Bloomington on October 30th. The Gems have played eight of their first nine games at home but tonight marks the first of four straight on the road and it is the final game of the Gems first three-games in three-nights series this season. Tim Hartung has returned to the lineup in a big way, he and line-mates Mike Vaskivuo and Corey Couturier have combined for nine points (4G, 5A) in the two games already this weekend. The Gems had 20 power plays against them over the last two games and killed off 17 of those 20. Goaltender Derek MacIntyre has been a nice surprise winning both starts he received and stopping 78 of 82 shots against.
