Mavericks Defeat Americans 5-4 in Overtime - Missouri Closes Season

March 27, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kansas City Mavericks News Release

ALLEN, TX - The Missouri Mavericks edged the Central Division leading Allen Americans on Friday night with a 5-4 overtime victory, marking their first win of the season over Allen in their nine-game series. The Americans fought their way back onto the scoreboard after the Mavs took a commanding 4-0 lead, scoring four unanswered goals through the final 40 minutes of regulation to tie the game 4-4 and send the decision to extra time.

The Mavericks opened the game with a quick goal via Mavs leading goal-scorer, Andrew Courtney, who lit the lamp first for Missouri with an unassisted goal at 3:55. Teammate Lindsay Sparks was in position to take a feed from left wing Geordie Wudrick in front of the Americans' net with just under four minutes remaining in the first period, to double the Mavericks lead over Allen, 2-0.

The Americans came back into the second period with an aggressive pace, but Missouri took hold of all opportunities in front of Allen goaltender, J.P. Anderson, to take a 4-0 lead within four minutes of the start of the frame. Jared Brown bested Anderson with a sharp-angled shot at the goal line, assisted by Lee Reimer and Tyson Gimblett at 2:18 before Tyler Currier scored the fourth goal of the night (his second of the season for Missouri), short-handed, with a lone assist from Sebastien Thinel at 3:42.

Spurred by their sudden 4-0 deficit, the Americans found their way onto the board before their power-play opportunity was over to cut into the Missouri lead at 4:13 of the second period. Garrett Clarke was credited with the Americans' power-play goal, with Vincent Arseneau and Spencer Asuchak taking the helpers. The Americans were not done there, as Asuchak split Missouri's lead 4-2 with his own tally at 7:45 for his tenth goal of the season. Tony Turgeon and Chad Costello were credited with assists.

The Americans continued their aggressive run at the Mavericks net in the third period, eventually tying the game 4-4 with goals from rookie Tanner Eberle, playing in his first professional game, assisted by Arseneau and Trevor Ludwig at 4:20. Costello scored his thirty-sixth goal of the season to tie the game up at 6:59 on an Allen power-play. Asuchak and Arseneau assisted on the game-tying goal.

Tied 4-4 through sixty minutes of regulation hockey, the Americans led shots on goal 38-16 over the Missouri Mavericks, but only one more shot would matter, and only one more shot would be taken, as Lindsay Sparks scored the game-winning goal for the Mavs 1:02 into the overtime period for a 5-4 Missouri Mavericks victory. Brown and defenseman Chris Owens were credited with the assists on Sparks' nineteenth goal of the season.
