Wydo's Welcome Is a Win for Wheeling

March 27, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release

WHEELING, WV- On Friday night, WesBanco Arena was filled with fans from Robert Morris University, eagerly anticipating the professional debut of forward Cody Wydo. Sure enough, Wydo gave everyone in attendance something to be excited about, as he tied the score early in the third period, before setting up Sahir Gill's game winner with 10:24 remaining, as the Nailers edged the Fort Wayne Komets, 2-1. Eric Hartzell backstopped the triumph with 35 saves.

The goaltending and defenses were at the tops of their games on this particular night, as Eric Hartzell and Pat Nagle matched each other save for save during the opening forty minutes of action. The only shots that eluded them during that time were one post each way by Wheeling's Sahir Gill and Fort Wayne's Mike Embach.

Finally, at the 6:48 mark of the third period, the shutout was broken by the Komets. Shawn Szydlowski slid a pass through the high slot, which kicked off of the right wing wall. The bounce went right to Eric Faille, who clobbered a slap shot into the left side of the cage. Fort Wayne's lead lasted for just 35 seconds, before the Nailers drew even. Tanner Burton found Cody Wydo skating into the left circle, giving his teammate the opportunity to pick the top-right corner of the net, which practically blew the roof off of WesBanco Arena. In addition to Wydo's milestone, the assist was Burton's first ECHL point. A little more than two minutes after that, Wheeling went ahead. Wydo's shot from just above the left side of the goal line banked off of goaltender Pat Nagle and right to Sahir Gill, who crashed in for what turned out to be the game winning goal. That 2-1 score stood, as Hartzell and the defense kept the Komets off of the board the rest of the way.

Eric Hartzell played a spectacular game, earning the win for Wheeling, as he thwarted 35 of the 36 shots he faced. Pat Nagle also put forth a strong effort for Fort Wayne, but ended up on the other side of the decision with 30 saves on 32 shots.
