Memphis Redbirds News Release

MEMPHIS, Tennessee - The Memphis Redbirds rode stellar starting pitching from Matthew Liberatore and timely clutch hitting en route to a 5-1 win over the Nashville Sounds (Triple-A affiliate, Milwaukee Brewers) on a Tuesday night at AutoZone Park. The Redbirds started a two-week, 12-game-long homestand on Tuesday.

Liberatore grabbed the headlines on Tuesday night, starring in front of the home fans. The top prospect in the St. Louis Cardinals system went seven innings of one-run ball for Memphis (42-49), allowing just three hits and one walk while striking out nine batters. The nine punchouts equaled Liberatore's season-high in a start this season.

Buoyed by the stellar pitching, the Redbirds utilized timely hitting to score their five runs. Memphis plated single runs in the first, third and fifth, as Juan Yepez, Alec Burleson, and Nolan Gorman drove in runs in each inning respectively.

The final winning push came in the eighth inning, as Memphis scored twice on consecutive two-out singles from Conner Capel and Evan Mendoza to make the game 5-1 and put it out of reach. Memphis scored the first run of the game - when the Redbirds score first in games this season, they are 28-19.

The Memphis Redbirds are the proud Triple-A Affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. Memphis has claimed four League Championships and one Triple-A National Championship since their affiliation with St. Louis began in 1998.
