Rough start in Rochester

(Rochester, NY) - The Rochester Red Wings (35-51) got the best of the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (41-47) on Tuesday night as they won 8-4.

The Red Wings came out swinging as they tagged Mark Appel (3-3) for five runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 5-0 lead. Keibert Ruiz hit an RBI single that scored Donovan Casey that was followed by a grand slam hit by Derek Dietrich. Appel lasted just one inning as he allowed five runs off three hits and two walks with one strikeout.

Brady Lail followed with two scoreless innings in relief as he issued three walks and struck out three batters. Sam Coonrod turned in one scoreless inning on a major league rehab assignment.

Darick Hall got Lehigh Valley on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning. He hit a three-run home run against Bryan Bonnell to cut Rochester's lead to 5-3. The home run was Hall's 11th of the season. Rochester quickly answered with another run in the bottom of the fifth inning as they extended their lead to 6-3. Nick Banks hit an RBI single against Ramon Rosso to score Daniel Palka.

Mickey Moniak inched the Pigs closer as he hit an RBI single against Patrick Murphy to score Freddy Galvis and cut the Red Wings lead to 6-4. Rochester's Jake Noll followed up with a two-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning against Braeden Ogle to give them an 8-4 lead.

Alberto Baldonado (2-1) earned the win for Rochester as he pitched a scoreless 1 2/3 innings. He recorded four strikeouts.

The IronPigs and Red Wings continue their series on Wednesday evening at Frontier Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
