Toronto Marlies News Release
(Jan. 8): The Marlies play their second of two meetings against the Milwaukee Admirals - AHL affiliate of the Nashville Predators - on Thursday night at Bradley Center. The Admirals defeated Toronto on December 6 at Ricoh Coliseum in their most recent matchup, 6-2. Alexander Sulzer had a three point (two goals, one assist) night and Cal O'Reilly had a game-high, three assists. Jiri Tlusty and Ben Ondrus scored the two Marlies goals in the loss. Milwaukee's power play went 3-for-4.
The Admirals currently rank first in the West Division with a record of 24- 9-1-1 for 50 points. Milwaukee enters the game on Thursday night on a franchise-high, 10-game winning streak. They haven't lost at Bradley Center since November 15 to the Rockford IceHogs, 5-2. Mike Santorelli leads the club and ranks second (tie) in the AHL with 41 points (13 goals, 28 assists). Santorelli was named CCM/AHL Player of the Month for December. O'Reilly ranks second on the team and AHL with 32 assists. Cody Franson was selected to the AHL All-Rookie team last season and is currently the Admirals top defenceman with 12 points (four goals, eight assists) this season. He won the Gold medal at the World Junior Championship while representing Canada in 2007. The Marlies lost both games against the Admirals last season, including a 4-2 defeat in their most recent road matchup on January 10, 2008 in Milwaukee.
(Jan. 9): The Marlies face off against the Quad City Flames - AHL affiliate of the Calgary Flames - on Friday night at the I Wireless Center. This will be the second meeting between the two teams this season with the Marlies losing a 3-1 decision to the Flames on October 25 at Ricoh Coliseum. The Flames currently rank seventh in the West Division with a 13-16-4-3 record for 33 points. Quad City is 7-9-2-0 at home this season. Last year the Marlies went 2-0-0-0 against Quad City. Left Winger Kyle Greentree leads the Flames in points with 32 (16 goals, 16 assists) and is also second in the AHL with 126 shots on goal. Goaltender Leland Irving was a member of the 2007 Canadian World Junior Gold Medal team.
Defenceman Anders Eriksson Forward Max Taylor registered his first career AHL hat-trick in the Marlies 6-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phantoms on Saturday night. Taylor finished the game with three goals, one assist and a plus-three rating. currently ranks 15th in the AHL in points among defenceman with 19 (two goals, 17 assists) and is first with .908 points per game among defenceman. He was also a member of the 1997-98 Detroit Red Wings Stanley Cup Championship team. The 2007-08 Quad City Flames set an AHL record for shootout appearances with 18. The club went 11-7 in the shootout, tying the league mark for wins. Flames forward Brett Sutter (one goal, six assists) is the son of Calgary Flames General Manager Darryl Sutter. This will be the second and final meeting between the two clubs this season.
(Jan. 10): The Marlies finish off the week with their first meeting of the season against the Rockford IceHogs - AHL affiliate of the Chicago Blackhawks - on Friday night at the MetroCentre. The IceHogs own a record of 19-14-0-3, ranking fourth in the West Division. Rockford is currently on a three-game winning streak and has won three of their last four games at home. The IceHogs haven't played an opponent outside of their division since November 8 when they travelled to Norfolk. Petri Contiola leads the team in points with 33 (nine goals, 24 assists) and has registered at least a point in his last eight home games (13 total). Defenceman Danny Groulx is ninth among defenceman in points with 21 (three goals, 18 assists). Winger Pascal Pelletier became the first IceHogs player in the AHL era to record two hat-tricks in one season when he recorded three goals against Chicago on Saturday night. Forward Jack Skille played for Team USA at the 2006 World Junior Championships which is the same year Marlies goaltender Justin Pogge won Gold with Team Canada. The IceHogs rank fifth in the league with 780 total penalty minutes. This season the IceHogs have a home record of 13-5-0-2 for 28 points and their home power play ranks fourth in the league with a 22.9% efficiency. The Marlies have yet to record a win against the IceHogs since the team came into the league last year. They have a 0-2-0 all-time record against Rockford. The two clubs will meet again on Saturday, January 31 at Ricoh Coliseum.
MARLIES HEADLINES:
On A Roll: The Marlies have won there last five home games at Ricoh Coliseum, including both games this past weekend. The Marlies have out-scored their opponents at Ricoh Coliseum, 24-9 during their five-game home winning streak. Toronto defeated Iowa and Philadelphia by identical 6-1 scores on Friday and Saturday night. Both wins tied season-highs for their largest margins of victory. Overall Toronto has won four out of their past five games. Since November 19, 2008 the Marlies are 15-7-0-1 and have earned a least a point in 16 of 23 games (0.674 points percentage). Toronto is 7-2-0-1 over their past 10 games.
Tim Becoming a Staple: Tim Stapleton has recorded at least a point in 16 of his past 23 games (five goals, 19 assists). In that span, Stapleton has notched seven multi-point games. He's recorded back-to-back multi assist games. The Oak Park, Illinois native ranks first on the Marlies and second in the AHL (tie) with 17 power play assists. Stapleton ranks first in the AHL with six shootout goals. In 36 games this season, Stapleton has 33 points (six goals, 27 assists) including one game-winning tally. Stapleton ranks first on the Marlies in points and assists.
Bates On The Board: Bates Battaglia has registered almost a point-per-game so far this season. In 15 games he's tallied six goals and seven assists. On Friday night against the Iowa Chops he was named the game's first star, recording two goals and collecting one assist. Battaglia's scored a point in five of his past eight games and has 11 points in his last 10 games.
Special Teams:
Power Play: The Toronto Marlies power play has clicked for 21 goals in their past 22 games. Over their past two games they've scored three goals on six power play chances. The Marlies have registered seven, multi-power play goal games so far this season. Toronto's power play currently ranks eighth in the AHL with a 19.7% success rate. Their power play on the road ranks third overall at 22.5%. They've scored at least one power play goal in 13 of 18 road games. Tim Stapleton leads all Marlie skaters with 18 power play points. Jeremy Williams paces the club with nine power play tallies.
Munny In The Bank: Adam Munro picked up his sixth win of the season on Saturday afternoon against the Philadelphia Phantoms. He turned aside 14 shots in the Marlies 6-1 win. He currently has a record of 6-4-0 and has a 2.40 goals-against average and 0.913 save percentage. Munro shutout the Binghamton Senators on Friday, November 21 for his first shutout in a Marlies uniform, making 25 saves in the victory. He is the first Marlies goalie to earn a shutout on the road since Justin Pogge on October 27, 2006 in Grand Rapids.
Marlie To The Max: Max Taylor had a career afternoon on Saturday against the Philadelphia Phantoms in Toronto's 6-1 win. Taylor recorded his first career AHL hat-trick. In addition to netting a natural hat-trick, he also collected an assist and was a game-high (tie) plus-three. In nine games with Toronto, he has five goals, two assists and a plus-eight rating. The Ottawa, Ontario native recorded five goals in just four games while he was with the Reading Royals. On Friday, December 12, Taylor registered a hat trick in the Royals 3-2 win over Elmira.
Multi-Point Games: Tim Stapleton leads the team with nine multi-point games this season. This past weekend, the Marlies had seven players record multi-point games. Max Taylor registered a Marlies team-high, four points (three goals, one assist) against the Philadelphia Phantoms. The only players to record three-points or more in a game are Stefano Giliati, Andre Deveaux, Jeremy Williams, Jiri Tlusty, Bates Battaglia and Tim Stapleton.
Making Their Debut: The Marlies have dressed 10 new players through their first 36 games this season. James Reimer made his AHL debut on Saturday, December 27, becoming the 10th new player to dress for the club. Joey Ryan made his AHL debut on Saturday, December 13 against the Syracuse Crunch. Defencemen Richard Petiot, Andy Schneider, Juha Uotila and Josef Boumedienne; forwards Andre Deveaux, Tim Stapleton and Mark Bell have all seen action in at least one game for the Marlies. Newcomer, Tim Stapleton scored the Marlies first goal of the 2008-09 season in the third period and also scored in the shootout on Friday night against the Binghamton Senators. Captain Benny: Ben Ondrus has scored six goals over his past nine games. On Saturday, December 13 in Syracuse the Marlies captain scored a season-high two goals in Toronto's 4-2 win. Ondrus appeared in the first 30 games this season for the Marlies and has collected nine points (seven goals, two assists) and 40 penalty minutes.
Reading Report: The Toronto Maple Leafs ECHL affiliate, the Reading Royals currently rank seventh in the American Division with a 9-23-0-2 record for 20 points. Tyler Doig leads the Royals with 23 points (six goals, 17 assists). Doig has recorded seven points in his past four games (two goals, five assists). Dan Rudisuela has seven goals and eight assists in 32 games. Maple Leafs prospect, Michael Ouzas who is currently playing for the Royals, has a record of 11-8-1 with a 2.95 goals-against average and 0.900 save percentage, including two shutouts. Unveiling the Banner: The Marlies opened up the 2008-09 season by unveiling their North Division championship banner from the year before. The Marlies won their division with a 50-21-3-6 record for 109 points, nine more points then next closest Syracuse (100 points). Toronto has 15 players that helped them to their title berth on the opening day roster.
MARLIES QUICK HITS: - Tim Stapleton leads the team with 33 points and Darryl Boyce is the Marlies active goal scoring leader with nine tallies.
- Juha Uotila recorded a Marlies season-high, plus-four rating on Saturday night in the Marlies 6-1 win over the Iowa Chops.
- Mark Bell has recorded three goals in his past two games, including two goals on Friday night.
- Stefano Giliati registered his first three-point game (one goal, two assists) of the season on Saturday afternoon and was named the game's second star.
- The Marlies tied a team-high with 20 shots during the second period on Saturday afternoon. Through the first two periods of play, the Marlies outshot the Phantoms 32-9 and finished the game outshooting them 41-15.
- Kris Newbury was recalled by the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday, January 3 and played against the Ottawa Senators. Newbury skated in 4:55 of time on ice in the Maple Leafs 3-1 win.
- Former Toronto Marlies forward John Mitchell scored the lone Maple Leafs goal last Thursday night in Toronto's 4-1 loss to the Buffalo Sabres. In 34 games this season, Mitchell has recorded three goals and seven assists.
- The Marlies have won three of their past four games that have been decided in a shootout.
- Darryl Boyce ranks first on the team with 80 penalty minutes and Phil Oreskovic and Stefano Giliati share the team lead with a plus-10 rating.
- The Marlies are 13-0-0-0 when taking a lead into the third period this season and are 14-3-0-0 when they record the game's first goal. When Toronto scores three or more goals, they own a record of 18-2-0-1.
- The Marlies currently rank fourth in the North Division with a 19-14-0-3 record for 41 points through 36 games.
Reebok/AHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK NOMINEE For the week ending January 5, 2009, the Toronto Marlies nominated forward Max Taylor for consideration as the Reebok/AHL Player of the Week. In Toronto's 6-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phantoms on Saturday night, the Ottawa, Ontario native registered his first career AHL hat-trick. Taylor also collected one assist in the game and recorded a plus-three rating. In nine games this season with the Marlies, he has seven points (five goals, two assists). He ranks third (tie) on club with a plus-eight rating.
IN THE BOOTH: The Marlies and Rogers Cable TV announced their 29 game broadcast schedule, which will comprise of Friday, Saturday and Sunday home dates. The television play-by-play duties will be handled by the voice of the Marlies, John Bartlett, who returns for his fourth season with the organization. Former NHLer and Toronto Maple Leaf, Bob McGill, will join Bartlett in the booth for all 29 games. The Marlies announced on Friday, October 10 in conjunction with the FAN 590, that all 80 regular season games will be live on the FAN 590. Marlies play-by-play announcer John Bartlett, along with colour commentator, Bob McGill will provide the live action for Marlies fans this season. Recap: The Marlies were shutout for the first time on the road since the end of last season, falling to their division-rivals, the Bulldogs 4-0. Kyle Chipchura opened the scoring with his 10th of the season mid-way through the first period. Hamilton scored another goal on the power play to give them a 2-0 advantage at the first intermission. Toronto outshot Hamilton 10-5 in the second, but Bulldogs starting goaltender Marc Denis stood tall. Pacioretty and Russell would each score for Hamilton two minutes apart in the second period to seal the victory. Marlies starting goalie Justin Pogge made 21 saves in the loss and Denis made 21 saves for the shutout.

Recap: The Marlies won their fourth straight home game, and their first of 2009, defeating the Chops 6-1 at Ricoh Coliseum. Bates Battaglia (two goals, one assist) and Mark Bell (two goals) led the way for Toronto. The Marlies netted a season-high, four goals in the third period to seal the victory. Justin Pogge turned aside 28 of 29 shots fired at him. Toronto's special teams were solid in both regards, going 1-for-3 on the power play and killing off all six penalties against them. Juha Uotila had a season-high, plus-four rating and five other Marlies recorded plus-two ratings.

Recap: The Marlies picked up where they left off on Saturday afternoon, downing the Phantoms 6-1 at Ricoh Coliseum. Toronto has won their last five home games. The Phantoms struck just over a minute into the game, but Toronto quickly responded with three before the first intermission. Darryl Boyce, Stefano Giliati and Mark Bell all scored first period goals. The Marlies outshot Philadelphia 32-9 through two periods of play. Max Taylor scored his first of three goals mid-way through the second period. Taylor would score two, third period goals to complete the natural hat-trick. Giliati finished the night with one goal, two assists and a plus-three rating. Adam Munro made 14 saves for his sixth win of the season.
