LAST WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS

Vs. Providence (12/31): The Manchester Monarchs ended 2008 with their fourth consecutive win, a 4-2 win over the Providence Bruins at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Wednesday night. Center Dusty Collins, right wing Ryan Murphy, center Marty Murray and left wing Scott Parse picked up tallies in the win. Right wing Mikko Lehtonen and center Levi Nelson found the back of the net for the Bruins. Monarchs' goaltender Jonathan Bernier (10-8-2) earned his 10th victory on the season and fourth in a row after halting 24 shots from Providence while Bruins' netminder Tuukka Rask (14-12-0) took his 12th loss of the season after stopping 29 shots. Manchester went 2-for-8 on the power play. Providence was 1-for-6 with the man advantage.

At Springfield (1/2): The Manchester Monarchs battled into the ninth round of a shootout to eventually fall to the Springfield Falcons, 3-2, in a shootout at the MassMutual Center on Friday night. Monarchs' defenseman Alec Martinez and left wing Scott Parse scored in regulation. Falcons' left wing Guillaume Lefebvre and center Ryan Potulny picked up tallies in regulation. Center David Meckler, Parse (2), left wing Vladimir Dravecky (2) and right wing Trevor Lewis scored for the Monarchs in the nine-round shootout. Manchester goaltender Jonathan Bernier stopped 2-of-9 shooters and took his third shootout loss of the season with 29 saves on 31 shots. Potulny (2), left wing Rob Schremp, left wing Bryan Lerg (2), right wing Carl Corazzini and left wing Derek Bekar scored for the Falcons. Springfield netminder Jeff Deslauriers stopped 3-of-9 snipers in the shootout and earned his first win of the season stopping 27-of-29 shots. Manchester did not have a power play. Springfield was 0-for-3 with the man advantage.

LAST WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS (CONTINUED)

Vs. Grand Rapids (1/3): The Manchester Monarchs dropped their first home game of 2009 in a 2-1 decision to the Grand Rapid Griffins at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Saturday night. The Monarchs lone goal came off the stick of defenseman Davis Drewiske. Left wing Mattias Ritola and center Darren Haydar scored goals for the Griffins. Monarchs' netminder Jeff Zatkoff (0-2-0) took his second loss of the season with 30 saves. Griffins' goaltender Jimmy Howard (9-8-2) earned his ninth with 26 saves on 27 shots. Manchester went 0-for-2 on the power play. Grand Rapids was 0-for-3 with the man advantage.

At Lowell (1/4): Right wing Jon DiSalvatore picked up a hat trick as the Manchester Monarchs fell to the Lowell Devils, 4-1, at the Tsongas Arena on Sunday evening. Center Marty Murray scored the lone goal for the Monarchs. Center Petr Vrana added the game-winner to DiSalvatore's hat trick for Lowell. Monarchs' netminder Jonathan Bernier (10-9-3) took his ninth loss of the season with 24 saves on 27 shots. Devils' goaltender Jeff Frazee (10-6-2) earned his 10th victory of the season with 32 saves. Manchester went 0-for-5 on the power play. Lowell was 2-for-4 with the man advantage.

MONARCHS NEWS & NOTES

Manchester (16-16-0-5) dropped to fifth place in the Atlantic Division with 37 points. The Providence Bruins (22-14-1-1) lead the Atlantic Division with 46 points.

After winning four in a row, the Monarchs have dropped their last three games.

The Monarchs are in 25th place in the AHL on the power play. The team is 26-for-177 with the man advantage for a 14.7-percent rating.

Manchester has stopped their opponent 158 times on 189 power play opportunities for an 83.6-percent rating this season, good for 13th place.

Manchester is undefeated in regulation on Fridays when they play on the road this season. They are 3-0-0-1 away from the Verizon Wireless Arena on Fridays and 7-2-0-2 overall on their best day of the week.

The Monarchs are 3-9-0-0 on Saturday's this season, but have won two of their last four Saturday contests.

When the Monarchs score first, they have gained a point in every game but one. Manchester is 13-1-0-4 in the 18 games where they have scored first.

Manchester also earns a point when they have the lead following the first period (11-0-0-3). They are 11-1-0-2 when leading after two periods.

The Monarchs are undefeated when scoring four or more goals (8-0-0-0) and are 7-1-0-2 when tallying three goals in a game.

After going 2-4-0-1 in the month of October, the Monarchs went 7-4-0-2 in November and 7-6-0-1 in December. With only one game being played in January, Manchester is 0-2-0-1 this month.

Right wing Trevor Lewis (8-14=22) leads the Monarchs in points and ranks second on the Monarchs in goals (eight). He was recalled by the Kings on December 18 and made his NHL debut against the Buffalo Sabres on Friday, December 19 and scored his first NHL goal against the Detroit Red Wings on December 20. Lewis had three points (1-2=3), zero penalty minutes and a zero plus/minus rating in five games with the Kings this season. Lewis was reassigned to Manchester on Tuesday, December 30 and has collected three assists in the two games he's played in since his return.

Center Marty Murray (5-16=21) moved into second place on the Monarchs in scoring this week with 21 points.

Murray has four points (2-2=4) in his last five games.

The veteran's 16 assists are tied for the team lead.

Manchester's third leading scorer, reigning AHL Rookie of the Year right wing Teddy Purcell (9-10=19), is on recall with the Los Angeles Kings.

Purcell was recalled to the Kings on December 10. He still leads the Monarchs in goals with nine tallies on the season. He registered a goal and an assist in the Kings game against San Jose on December 15. In 11 games with the Kings this season, Purcell has six points (1-5=6), zero penalty minutes and a plus-2 plus/minus rating.

Center Gabe Gauthier (3-16=19) shares the team's assist lead with Murray; each player has 16 assists.

Gauthier is ranked sixth on the Monarchs all-time assists list with 81 helpers over three seasons. He is also ranked 10th in goals scored with 40 and ranked eighth with 121 points.

Left wing Scott Parse (8-7=15) has four goals in his last six games and has moved into fifth place on the Monarchs roster with 15 points. Parse's plus/minus rating of plus-6 is tied for the team lead.

Left wing Vladimir Dravecky (2-12=14) ranks sixth on the Monarchs squad with 14 points.

Right wing David Meckler (8-5=13) picked up an assist in Sunday's loss to Lowell to move into seventh place with 13 points.

Defenseman Viatcheslav Voynov (4-8=12) leads Monarchs blueliners and is ranked eighth on the squad.

Voynov was reassigned by Los Angeles to Team Russia on December 18 to participate in the World Junior Championships. Team Russia is 3-1 so far in the championship and will be playing in the bronze medal game on Monday.

Meckler (8-5=13) is tied for second on the Monarchs in goals scored with eight tallies.

Right wing Ryan Murphy has played in 12 games with the Monarchs this season and shares the team lead in the plus/minus category with Parse with a plus-6. During the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons, Murphy collected 24 points (12-12=24) and 67 penalty minutes in 102 games. Playing on the top line this season, Murphy has three goals and two assists for five points in his 12 games.

Rookie defenseman Alec Martinez has 10 points (4-6=10) in 31 games thus far this season, including five points (2-3=5) in his last six games. Martinez scored with 42 seconds remaining in Friday's game against the Springfield Falcons to push overtime and the eventual nine-round shootout. Manchester fell 3-2 in the shootout to the Falcons.

Goaltender Jonathan Bernier has started the last eight of nine Monarchs games and collected four consecutive wins. The rookie netminder is 4-3-0-1 in those eight contests. In 22 games this season with the Monarchs, Bernier is 10-9-3 with a goals-against-average of 2.66 and a .902 save-percentage.

Goaltender Jonathan Quick was recalled by the Kings on December 16. He is 3-3-0 in seven games with a 1.59 goals-against-average and a .943 save percentage with the Kings thus far this season. Quick collected his first shutout of his NHL career stopping all 24 shots from the Columbus Blue Jackets in the Kings 3-0 win on December 23. He has two shutouts in his last three games after he stopped all 26 shots in the Kings 4-0 win over the Phoenix Coyotes on Saturday, December 27. While with the Monarchs, Quick had a record of 6-5-2, a 2.68 goals-against-average and a .919 save-percentage.

MONARCHS TRANSACTIONS

12-30-08: The Los Angeles Kings (NHL) assigned right wing Trevor Lewis to the Manchester Monarchs (AHL).

12-31-08: The Manchester Monarchs (AHL) released defenseman Eric Werner from his AHL contract.

12-31-08: The Los Angeles Kings (NHL) recalled center Brian Boyle from the Manchester Monarchs.
