Four Kings Prospects Win Medals At World Junior Championship

OTTAWA, ON - Los Angeles Kings prospects Thomas Hickey and Colten Teubert, both defenseman, each earned a gold medal as they helped Team Canada defeat Team Sweden 5-1 tonight at the World Junior Championships in Ottawa. Forward Oscar Moller, who played for Team Sweden, will receive a silver medal. Defenseman Viatcheslav Voynov will earn a bronze medal after he helped Team Russia defeat Team Slovakia, 5-2, earlier this afternoon.
Hickey, who was Canada's team captain for the tournament, recorded three points (0-3=3), two penalty minutes and five shots on goal in six tournament games as Team Canada went a perfect 6-0. Teubert recorded zero points, four penalty minutes and five shots on goal also in six games. Team Canada has now won the gold medal at the World Junior Championships five years in a row. Last year's gold-medal winning team featured Hickey and current Kings Drew Doughty, Wayne Simmonds and Jonathan Bernier (currently playing in Manchester).
Moller, who was Sweden's team captain, recorded four points (1-3=4), four penalty minutes and 23 shots on goal in six tournament games as Team Sweden went 5-1 and earned the silver medal for the second consecutive year. Moller, who also was a member of Sweden's silver-medal winning team last year, has played in 30 games with the Kings this season, his first in the NHL, and has 13 points (6-7=13) and 14 penalty minutes. Moller is expected to travel back to Los Angeles tomorrow.
Voynov recorded four points (1-3=4), zero penalty minutes, a plus-1 rating and 12 shots on goal in seven tournament games as Team Russia went 5-2 and earned the bronze medal for the second consecutive year. Voynov was also a member of Russia's bronze-medal winning team last year.
The Kings were the only NHL team with two defensemen on Team Canada and were also one of only four NHL teams to have two players on the Canadian roster.
Other current Kings who have one medals at the World Junior Championships: Kyle Calder (silver medal for Canada in 1999), Denis Gauthier (gold medal for Canada in 1996), Alexander Frolov (gold medal for Russia in 2002), Jack Johnson (bronze medal for USA in 2007), Trevor Lewis (bronze medal for USA in 2007), Patrick O'Sullivan (gold medal for USA in 2004) and Jarret Stoll (bronze medal for Canada in 2001 and silver medal for Canada in 2002).
