Woods And French To Coach In All Star Classic
January 5, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Hershey Bears News Release
The HERSHEY BEARS Hockey Club won three of four games in New England last week to strengthen its hold on the best overall record in the AHL. For having the best winning percentage at the close of play Sunday, head coach Bob Woods and assistant coach Mark French will coach the Canadian AHL All-Star team at the 2009 AHL All-Star Classic January 25-26 at the DCU Center in Worcester, MA.
After a game Wednesday in Norfolk, the BEARS will return home to face Houston this Friday at 7:00 p.m. Albany comes in Saturday before the BEARS make up a game in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Sunday at 5:05 p.m. Tickets for all BEARS home games are on sale now at the GIANT Center box office, or by calling (717) 534- 3911.
The greatness of Giroux: BEARS forward Alexandre Giroux, who was assigned Saturday by the Washington Capitals, is HERSHEY's nominee for Reebok AHL Player of the Week for the period ending January 4. Giroux scored a goal and assisted on three others in a 6-2 win over Hartford Saturday, and followed that up with four goals and an assist in a 7-2 win over Worcester at the DCU Center. Giroux leaped into a second place tie in the AHL in goals scored with 23, trailing only Chris Minard of the Wilkes- Barre/Scranton Penguins (26).
Woods and French: Bob Woods will make his second coaching appearance at an AHL All-Star game, although it will be his first as a head coach. Woods was an assistant coach under head coach Bruce Boudreau at the 2007 AHL All-Star Classic in Toronto. French, in his first full season as an AHL assistant coach, will be making his first appearance.
Aucoin remains at the top: Center Keith Aucoin, who picked up four points Sunday in a 7-2 win over Worcester, leads the AHL in scoring with 48 points heading into Wednesday's game in Norfolk. Aucoin, who has led the league in scoring all season, has at least seven more points than any other player in the AHL as play begins this week.
Aeros in town Friday: The game against Houston Friday at GIANT Center marks the first time the Aeros will play a game in the six-year old facility. Houston has never faced HERSHEY in a regular season game in central PA but did face the BEARS in the 2002 Calder Cup playoffs.
Washington update: The Capitals host the Philadelphia Flyers Tuesday night at Verizon Center before welcoming Columbus to town on Friday night. Washington has the fourth best record in the NHL.
