Mangum Grand Slam Propels Jumbo Shrimp by Clippers

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Jake Mangum clubbed a grand slam to lead the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp to an 8-4 victory on Thursday over the Columbus Clippers at Huntington Park.
With the game scoreless, Jordan Groshans singled to lead off the third. Charles Leblanc followed by blasting a two-run home run off Columbus (54-66, 21-25) starter Jerad Eickhoff (1-4) to put Jacksonville (59-63, 27-21) in front.
The Jumbo Shrimp blew it open in the fourth. With one out, Griffin Conine, who had three hits, doubled and Jerar Encarnacion singled to put runners on the corners. Groshans laced a base hit to center to bring home Conine. After Leblanc walked to load the bases, Mangum drilled a grand slam to make it 7-0.
The Clippers got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the frame. Kyle Manzardo drew a leadoff walk. After a strikeout, Jhonkensy Noel and George Valera each singled, with the latter bringing home a run. Bryan Lavastida followed by doubling in two more tallies. Two batters after that, Micah Pries registered an RBI double to draw Columbus within 7-4.
That was as close as Columbus would get. With the same score, Leblanc doubled to jumpstart the sixth. He moved to third on a ground out and scored on Troy Johnston's sacrifice fly to set the final margin at 8-4.
The Jacksonville bullpen fired 5.0 shutout innings, with Josh Simpson (1-1) earning the win with five strikeouts in his 2.0 frames.
Jacksonville looks for their third consecutive win in Friday's 7:05 p.m. contest. LHP Devin Smelzter (4-8, 6.85 ERA) starts for the Jumbo Shrimp against Clippers RHP Zach Plesac (4-4, 5.89 ERA). Coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN 690 and www.ESPN690.com.
