Manchester Monarchs News Release
BRIDGEPORT, CT - The Manchester Monarchs' season-high winning streak ended at eight games when they were shutout by the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, 2-0, at the Arena at Harbor Yard on Saturday night.
Manchester (43-27-3-6) is in third place in the Atlantic Division with 95 points. Bridgeport (38-31-4-6) moved into fourth place in the Atlantic Division with 86 points and clinched a berth in the 2010 Calder Cup Playoffs.
"Bridgeport made a hard push at the start of the third and it paid off," said Head Coach Mark Morris. "Their energy and desperate play was the difference. Tonight, they wanted it more and that is why they won the game. We played fairly well but our execution and our ability to finish plays was off a bit. We hope to bounce back versus Springfield tomorrow afternoon."
Left wing Greg Mauldin recorded the first goal of the game at the 23 second mark of the third period to give Bridgeport a 1-0 advantage. From point blank range in the slot, left wing Jeremy Reich put the puck on net and goaltender Jonathan Bernier made the save. The puck landed on the right doorstep for Mauldin to bury the rebound. Left wing Jesse Joensuu assisted on Mauldin's 25th goal of the season.
The Sound Tigers doubled their lead to 2-0 at 4:20 of the final stanza when center Tyler Haskins netted his 12th goal of the season. Left wing Sean Bentivoglio slipped past the Monarchs defense and skated in on Bernier on a breakaway. Bentivoglio carried the puck and tried to sneak it between the goaltender's left pad and the right post but Bernier stuck out his toes to make the save. Haskins came flying down center ice to chip the puck over Bernier's pad before he could cover up the rebound. Defenseman Brett Motherwell assisted on the second goal of the game.
Bernier (30-21-6) took his 21st loss of the season with 14 saves on 16 shots. Sound Tigers netminder Scott Munroe (19-16-3) earned his third shutout of the season stopping all 23 shots.
Manchester went 0-for-5 on the power play. Bridgeport was also 0-for-5 with the man advantage.
